Sametime 6.x and 7.x provide the capability to connect
to other Sametime communities via a Sametime
gateway. External users in your buddy list in Meanwhile
show status etc. correctly and chats seem to be
received from them. However it is not possible to start a
chat with them. An error is displayed in the chat window
saying that the feature is not supported.

The gateway uses SIP/SIMPLE but I do not believe that
there is any SIP/SIMPLE cabability in the client
required. However, the name in the buddy list is handled
slightly differently for external users and this may be
causing the problem.

Any chance of theses users being supported?

I would love to support this, but I've never had an account
on a community that connects with another community (via
    whatever means).

It would take some hacking from the gaim plugin's
perspective, simply because it's built around identifying a
buddy via a single string, rather than the ID/Community pair
that Sametime actually uses. I'm actually fairly astounded
that presense works for them, because of the same problem.

I won't ask you to post your buddy list here, because that
would obviously be a bit too revealing, but if you wouldn't
mind emailing it to me, I'd like to take a look at the
format used for describing buddies in an external community.

I just noticed that this was from a non-logged-in user. I'm
changing the tracker to require a valid login, just so I can
be sure people will be getting notifications when I post a
reply to a tracker item. Hopefully whoever submitted this
will check it in the near future, or is explicitly
    monitoring it...

I think I've got this all figured out, and working in HEAD.
It'll require some things in meanwhile HEAD as well.
