I am trying to find a similiar technolgy to GeekLog that uses PHP, but runs on the backend while allowing you to embed certain parts of it to the frontend...so far I've been told about Drupal (http://www.drupal.org/), I have posted a question on it about the aformentioned embeding of parts of the application. The problem with GL is that it makes the whole web site an application and doesn't allow you to create your own web site around it. GL2 is supposed to do exactly what I mentioned about running in the background. By the way, some of the prblems we are having with GL1.3.5sr2 are just bugs in that release, GL1.3.6rc1 is out (but they mention not to use it on production systems). Enrico, have you contacted the Web Designer you mentioned to me before, if you don't have time to contact him at the moment then please do so at your discretion. -- Michael Lauzon Founder & Lead Project Manager InceptionOS Project http://www.inceptionos.org/ mi...@in... --=20 Access all of your messages and folders wherever you are!=20 http://fastmail.fm - Get your mail using the web or your email software |

Now none of these come from me, but were posted to the story on the web site that Enrico put up called "Welcome to IOS!". To me two of the technologies do not seem relevant at this time, because one suggests using Ximian's Setup Tools which is tied to GNOME; and the other one is Progeny's PGI. The person who suggest that said take a look at the Elysium Project, but I keep getting 404s when trying to look at a page on their site. BUT PLEASE don't bring out yet another package technology. If novice users are ever going to be attracted to linux then a good (easy to use) software distribution and installation technology is necessary and they'll tend to group around the easiest, even as a technically experienced user I simply don't have the time to bother with tarballs anymore. We need competition within the linux distro community and the best way to foster this is to have a standard package system. Their are other areas that need focus now. Kelledin, Didn't know about the probs with 2.4.19; of course I'm not on the 'Net all that much...although I think we'll see a stable release of 2.4.20 sometime within the next two months but of course that may be just wishful thinking on my part; but you never know. Terry, This is your department, because only you can set this up...we need the FTP server to have anonymous access; because at the moment everyone who wanted to download IOS -- as soon as we have it to put up -- would have to have an account to get at the ISO image I think (well, that is how I understand it). Enrico, Well, I really only wanted the GeekLog to run as our news page, and not our main page. Also, if you could find an application like GL that lets you embed Polls, News, and an Event Calandar to the main page using PHP, because that would be much better and we could put up a much better designed site around that. Since the poll on the InceptionOS web site about Boot Managers, which has a lot of votes for LILO & GRUB; and one vote for Small Bootmanager...why don't we include all three? We need to decide about Bug tracking software to use, as I know SF has one...but bouncing people off site to report bugs and whatnot seems kind of lame. Anyways, we all know about Bugzilla (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bugzilla), which would be my first suggestion to use, as it is very robust. Actually, I just thought of asking this today...should have asked before -- if I would have thought of it a few days ago -- anyeverhow.... With the installer, do we have a choice of which filesystem we want to be installed for the OS to use? Ah, shit, I screwed up the second URL, which should be the following: http://software.freshmeat.net/search/?q=3Dupdate§ion=3Dprojects The first URL is of course correct. Kelledin, Wen to Freshmeat.net, and did a search and only came up with 6 results for an update program...I am including the URL: http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=3Dup2date§ion=3Dprojects And, there are probably more somewhere inside the following URL: http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=3Dup2date§ion=3Dprojects The latter one has to many pages to check through to find some, but the first URL that has the 6 apps, will also probably be listed under the second somewhere. So, we may want to check out the 6 first before we decide to maybe write our own. We need to get an update utility like RH's Up2Date, or Debian's Apt-Get type utilities eventually...either build our own, or borrow and enhance one of the aforementioned applications. -- Michael Lauzon Founder & Lead Project Manager InceptionOS Project http://www.inceptionos.org/ mi...@in... --=20 http://fastmail.fm - Get back to work |
