[Matplotlib-users] text rotation and mathtext

Can text created with mathtext can be rotated? I am trying to label a y 
axis like
y = ylabel(r'$rm{Temperature} (^\circ C)$')
and y.set_rotation() does not respond to 'horizontal' or 'vertical' 
settings.
