Kirill,
I've recently returned to Matplotlib and Scipy (and
happy to be back!!!).  I had the same problem and
solved it by putting the lines

import matplotlib
matplotlib.use('WXAgg')

before the usual import

from matplotlib.matlab import *

This worked for all of the example code.
If you don't have the examples, which are not included
in the Windows installer, go back to the download page
again and grab the .zip file.  This includes numerous
examples that you should be able to run with the two
lines mentioned above.
