[Matplotlib-users] latex just produces gibberish

I have an old fedora 11 system.  When I try to use latex math (e.g., $\mu=2$), 
it gives no error, but seems to produce gibberish (just ordinary ascii chars) in 
my pdf output.

Any ideas how to debug?

I found that a trivial 'hello_world.tex' could run through pdflatex OK.
