not work for you? the 10.3 means "10.3 or greater", and I'm pretty sure 
it is Universal, rather than just i386 as well. It should work with the 
python.org Python 2.5

there is:

matplotlib-0.99.1.1-py2.6-macosx-10.3-fat.egg

for Python 2.6

I haven't had to compiled MPL is a good while.
