Sebastien, Lars and myself have been working on version 2.84 and here is our development progress so far: Lars created an in-program version of the user guide. This was a major undertaking and should help users a great deal in understanding the program. He improved the look and feel of the About window as well. Sebastien also did some major work in refactoring the internal custom collections used in the simulation to now use standard concurrency-safe collections. This was something we had meant to do for quite a while and it should make the programming a lot cleaner and fix some UI bugs. He's currently working on fixing some sound bugs. I worked on adding mineral concentrations on the surface of Mars that could be mined. I added a Mars navigator tool map layer to show the concentrations. I refactored the exploration mission to record mineral concentration estimates for all sites explored, so they could be mined later. I refactored the research areology task to improve the accuracy of estimations of previously explored sites. Remaining tasks for 2.84: (Please add any that I've missed here) Creating a new light utility vehicle that will be used for mining. It will be an electric vehicle designed for one driver in an EVA suit and can have multiple attachment tools, such as a plow, back hoe, or air hammer, that will be represented as parts in its inventory. Its initial purpose will be for mining excavation, but will be used for construction later. One difficulty in adding this new vehicle is that only rover vehicles existed before and there may be a lot of code dealing with vehicles that assumes that they are rovers. This will need to be refactored. Manufacturing, parts and malfunctions related to this new vehicle will need to be created. They will need to be added to initial settlement template configuration as well as resupply lists. Creating a new mining mission and mining task. This mission will be similar to the collect ice or regolith missions, but will require bringing along a light utility vehicle and one crew member using it during the EVA. The percentage of the mineral ores available at the site that are collected will be based on the collective skills (areology, EVA operations, driving) of the mining crew. Creating manufacturing processes for converting mined mineral ores into useful resources, parts, etc. The settlement value for the ores will be based on the value of what they can be processed into, and the likelihood of sending a mining mission out to a site will be based on the estimated value of the ores there. We will need to add the mining mission to the create mission wizard. We will need to provide the user with all of the mine-able sites within range of the settlement to select from. We may need to show the explored sites on the map, and maybe create a map layer view for the Mars navigator tool that shows explored sites as well. I would like to refactor resources in the simulation from being hard coded to being described in an XML config file, so they are consistent with other things like parts. I would like to refactor the trade goods load determining algorithm for performance. It's very CPU intensive at the moment and I have some ideas for improving it. Adding a mission tab to the settlement info dialog to show all missions associated with the settlement. There would be an override check box that the user could select to require all new missions at the settlement to be user created. This will give the user more control over a settlement's missions. Take care, Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sf.net sc...@us... |

Kevin, We don't currently have a downloadable form of the user guide, but I think that's a good idea. When I update the web-based user guide for the next version release (in the next week or so), I'll create a PDF version of the user guide that can be downloaded from a link. Would that format work OK for you? The current web-based user guide is a bit limited and basically just covers the user interface and the configuration files. I've been meaning to add more useful information to it and others have suggested a FAQ and some description of how the simulation works behind the scenes. Do you have any suggestions for what you'd like to see in the user guide? Thanks, Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sf.net sc...@us... Hello, I greatly enjoy the Mars Simulation Project, but I was wondering if you would happen to have some form of downloadable form of the User-Guide avaible? I find it enjoyable to take the Mars Sim with me on my travels with my laptop, but then I lack internet access and thus it would be very useful for me. -- //Kevin Andersson Lettholm |

Hi, I write for the Institute of Engineering and Technology, a UK-based professional magazine for members of the IET. I am doing a feature about a virtual lunar colony concept called Lunar Boom Town. I was interested in interviewing Scott Davis about this idea and the possibility of Mars colonies for this article. Would this be possible to do within a month? (For background, see http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Lunar_Boom_Town). Thanks! -Svetlana Shkolyar |

Version 2.82 of the Mars Simulation Project has been released. This release includes the following features: Repair/maintenance parts: Twenty four parts have been added to the simulation. These are sometimes required by the settlers for repairing malfunctions or maintaining equipment, vehicles, buildings, etc. Each settlement gets an initial set of parts and is resupplied from Earth each Martian year. Settlements can trade parts among themselves. Automatic loading/saving UI settings: UI configuration is now automatically saved in an XML file when the program is closed and loaded when the program is opened. Window size/location (both outer window and inner desktop windows), volume and look & feel of the UI are currently saved. There are also a lot of bugs fixed and some performance improvements over the previous version. Please let me know if you have any problems with the program. Alireza, Well, I'm not sure what particular information you're wanting, so I'll cover a few different topics. To run the program, you will need to a Java Runtime Machine (JRE) of version 1.50 or newer. You can download one for free from Sun here: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp When you have Java installed on your computer, you should be able to run the program by double-clicking on the MarsProject.jar file. If this doesn't work, you can run it from the command line (in the same directory) with this command: java -jar MarsProject.jar The config directory contains a number of XML files that are used to configure the simulation. Feel free to edit these to try different things with the simulation, but you might want to create a backup copy of the original files in case you need to go back to them. To load your modified configuration files, you'll need to start a new simulation by selecting File -> New in the program's menu. The simulation uses an multi-agent model for representing people. Here's a good overview article on intelligent agents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_agent The planet Mars is represented by an object containing other objects which represent information such as weather, terrain, orbital position, landmarks, etc. Most of this information is pretty simple at this point, but we hope to add more details later. Settlements are comprised of multiple buildings, each which is described by the functions it can perform (farming, communications, power generation, etc.). Settlements can contain people, vehicles, equipment and resources. The people can take rover vehicles out on missions to explore the land, mine ice, or trade with other settlements. The simulation is basically turn-based, with one turn approximately every real world second. A single clock thread runs through the simulation and passes a block of simulation time to Mars and all the people on it to perform their tasks. I started this project because of my personal interest in space exploration and programming. I was largely inspired by the fictional books of Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars) and the non-fiction book The Case for Mars by Robert Zubrin. Here are a few good articles on Mars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonization_of_Mars I hope this information is useful to you. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Scott On 9/23/07, Alireza <gho...@gm...> wrote: > Dear Scott > i want you to send me your process for this project. i want know what is > exatly steps in create a simulation? > please help me to know. > and please send me details of your creating this project. > > bs regards > Alireza > > > > On 9/23/07, Scott Davis <mar...@gm...> wrote: > > Alireza, > > > > I'm not quite sure what exactly you're asking for. Fellow mars-simmers, Last night I released version 2.81 of the Mars Simulation Project. http://mars-sim.sf.net/ The main work in 2.81 was adding basic economics to the simulation. Settlements can now barter trade resources, equipment and vehicles with one another. As more things are added in future versions with repair parts, mining, manufacturing and construction, these will traded as well. There is a new trade mission in which settlers can estimate a profitable trade with another nearby settlement, load up a rover and drive there. They then disembark at the settlement and negotiate a trade with the most skilled trader among the local settlers. The crew then loads up the trade goods and returns to their original settlement. A new credit system keeps track of any credits/debts between settlements as barter trade is seldom perfectly balanced. A new trader job was added for settlers and only traders can initiate a trade mission. A trading skill was also added that is used in negotiating trades. A new rover, the cargo rover, was added that is specialized for trade (2 crew and large cargo capacity). Another aspect of economics, goods valuation, was added in this version. The values of all trade goods are determined for each settlement (using an arbitrary unit of measurement, value points (VP)) and updated periodically. These good values are not only used in trade, but in determining the actions of the settlers. For example, if the value of ice is high at a settlement, there is a greater chance the settlers will go on a ice prospecting mission. Engineers can toggle on or off the various automatic resource processing capabilities in the settlement's buildings based on the relative values of the process's inputs and outputs. I also changed the rescue/salvage mission so that the mission rover is fully loaded with fuel and life support supplies before embarking rather than loaded based on the estimated distance of the mission as it was previously. I think this will help improve the chances of this type of mission being successful because of the high probability that the crew will be dealing with difficult terrain. A few new UI components were added: * Trade Goods panel on the monitor tool that shows the values of all trade goods for all settlements. * Goods panel in the settlement info window that shows the values of all trade goods at the settlement. * Credit panel in the settlement info window that shows the credit/debt between this settlement and all other settlements. * Processes panel in the settlement info window that shows all the processes in all buildings of the settlement and if the process is on or off. * Maint panel in the settlement info window that shows the maintenance status of all buildings of the settlement and any malfunctions occurring at the settlement. I've also fixed a number of bugs and performance problems. I am concerned with performance issues related to trade calculations. The simulation runs fine on my faster computer but is noticeably slow on my old computer. I would appreciate any feedback on simulation/UI performance for this version. Download and enjoy! I uploaded the latest development build on the project website so you can try it out if you'd like. http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net/download/mars-sim_2.80_070304.zip I still need to finish implementing the mission editing capability of the mission tool and there's a few small bugs I need to fix. Hi, I'm releasing "Terraformer", a terraforming simulator, for beta testing. The current version is 0.2 beta for PC and Mac. The program allows you to: - terraform planets, moons and asteroids to create an earth like biosphere - rearrange the orbit of planets in a stellar system - add planets, moons and asteroids to each other - seed and colonise planets and moons - mine planets, moons, asteroids and comets for resources - convert or store the atmosphere of a planet - deploy solar panels for collecting energy - explore detailed phase diagrams for atmospheric gases - explore a taxonomic database - explore a stellar system The program also provides an energy cost analysis of each stage of terraforming. There are seperate PC and Mac versions. They can be downloaded from: Terraformer 0.2b (Mac).sit http://www.mediafire.com/?5d45mu5zddj Terraformer 0.2b (PC).zip http://www.mediafire.com/?1nmqno5itzu I look forward to your feedback Michael Bastion alt...@ya... http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Terraforming http://www.geocities.com/alt_cosmos/index.html |

Fellow mars-simmers, There were some bugs in version 2.79 related to creating new simulations and loading saved simulations through the UI. The program was retaining map data from the previous running simulation and this was taking up a considerable amount of memory and bogging down performance. The work around is to close the program, which automatically saves the running simulation, then start it up again, which automatically loads the default saved simulation without the memory problems. I was able to track down and fix the bug in the development code base for the next version, 2.80. I uploaded a snapshot of the code base on the project's website if you'd like to try it. It's beta quality, but should run fine and it includes the new mission tool. We've still got a few bugs to fix and features to implement before 2.80 release. http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net/download/mars-sim_2.80_061127.zip Let me know what you think, Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net sc...@us... |

Hal, Thanks for the suggestion. Are you thinking along the lines of a macro that could interact with the simulation? We were thinking of adding more interaction to the user interface but I hadn't really thought about scripts specifically. We do use XML configuration files (in the conf directory) that are read into a new simulation and are user-editable, but that's not quite the same thing as runtime scripting. I'm including the mars-sim-developers mailing list on this in case someone on that list has some ideas about this. Thanks, Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project sc...@us... Hello, I just released version 2.79 of the Mars Simulation Project. Changes in this version include: * New rover rescue/salvage mission. When a rover doesn't have the fuel or life support resources to make it back to a settlement, the crew will set an emergency beacon (In the navigator tool, the rover's name will blink on and off when the emergency beacon is set). People in nearby settlements can mount a mission to rescue the rover's crew, or at least salvage the rover if the crew has died. * Resource containers (bags, barrels, gas canisters and specimen containers) can hold a particular type or phase (liquid, solid or gas) of resource and can be carried in a unit's inventory. * Lots of bug fixes, refactoring and performance improvements. http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net We appreciate any feedback, bug reports or suggestions for inprovement of the project. For the next version, I'm planning on adding a mission viewer/editor that will allow the user to create new missions or edit existing missions in the simulation during runtime. Hopefully the development cycle on the next release will be quicker. Download and enjoy! Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net sc...@us... |

Hi. The Mars Simulation Project is a Java program and requires a Java runtime environment installed on your computer to run. You can download and install a free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun here: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp Sorry if the project website or the documentation was unclear about that. Let me know if you still have problems running the simulation after installing the JRE. Take care, Scott Davis Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net sc...@us...
