User: Allen Bryan, delurking and apologizing if this is a repeat post. Bug Reporting on Sourceforge: Has a bug itself, reported to Sourceforge. When my bugs are submitted, I get "ERROR getting bug_id". System: Windows ME, Sun JRE 1.3, MarsProject 2.71. When in USGS mode, the position of the lights indicating rover and base locations on the globe of the Mars Navigator Tool do *not* match the locations of said rovers and bases on the map displayed. By this I mean the following: * If I see a base dead center on the map, the green dot of light representing said base appears to be in the lower right corner of the green box denoting the map area. Similar offsets can be observed when the base is at upper left, etc.; in general, the position of the base or rover relative to the green box is southeast of the position expected from the large map. * This condition exists when a base is centered (by clicking on the bullseye found at Base UI-->Location). * The centering of bases and rovers on a map is not defective in USGS Map Mode. * Four possible failure modes exist: (a) The map drawn and the location on the map are correct; the location on the globe is correct; the map border on the globe is offset to the northwest. (b) The map drawn and the location on the map are correct; the map border on the globe is correct; the location on the globe is offset to the southeast. (c) The map border and location on the globe are correct; the map drawn is correct; the location on the map is offset to the southeast. (d) The map border and location on the globe are correct; the location on the map is correct; the map drawn is offset to the northwest. I believe that, due to the internal consistency of the co-ordinates between the "Go There" search tool, the "Center on unit" tool, and the reported co-ordinates, possibilities (c) and (d) are unlikely to be true. I therefore believe that possibilities (a) and (b) should be fully investigated. If (a) is correct, for instance, a simple offset of a few pixels is sufficient to solve this bug. I am 15 years old and it has recently dawned on me that i have a high intrest in this subject. Do you know how soon we can expect some time of construction on Mars? I have read several NASA reports and have seen that they plan to send a mix of robots on mars to build. Once settlements have been situated. Humans can inhabit the turrain. I think making a game out of this would be pretty cool. If you could give me any further information or any links that I could use to do some more research on this topic, i would appreciate it. Thank you ~<A HREF="mailto:Mo...@ao...">Mo...@ao...</A> |

Version 2.71 of the Mars Simulation Project has been released. http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net (note: the tarball version of the release has not been sucessfully uploaded to SourceForge, so I'll try to get that working tonight. The ZIP file version works fine now.) Version 2.71 is primarily focused on refactoring the code and reorganizing the directory structure. The simulation and the user interface are now cleanly broken apart into two packages. Greg Whelan added a new USGS mode that allows 8x zoom on the Mars Navigator surface map with an Internet connection. Resources are produced and consumed a great deal more in the simulation. INSITU resource processors have been added to the settlements to generate oxygen, fuel and water. The problematic Installer application has been removed, but the download for the project is much larger now. The project's Web page has been updated with a new user guide and javaDoc documentation. Looks like they finally have this mailing archived at Geocrawler: http://www.geocrawler.com/lists/3/SourceForge/3388/0/ I'm sending out this email to test it. I've contacted them several times in the past to add it like the developers list, but this time I've noticed it up. I'm hoping this mailing list will become more active and useful to users soon. Mars-simmers, If anyone wants to add their name to the people config file (people.conf - may be replaced by an XML equivalent) in the code base, please let me know. These will show up as people names in the simulation. My name is in there as well as fellow developer Greg Whelan and beta tester Mike Jones. The remaining names are those of people I know (with their permission) and a bunch of names I just made up. Please keep in mind that this is a GPL'd software project so your name might end up in derivative software, perhaps even a commercial distribution. Before I released the Mars Simulation Project as open source project, I was using a list of people and settlement names based on Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. I even had the settlements located approximately where they were on the books' inside maps. Due to copyright issues I replaced them and made up some settlement names. Thanks, Scott Davis Project Administrator Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net sc...@us... |

Chris, The Mars Simulation Project is designed to be a simulation of Mars settlements. It's computer controlled with a passive user interface allowing you to see what's going on in the world. It doesn't have any user interaction just yet, with the exception of text configuration files ("people.conf", "rovers.conf" and "settlements.conf") that let you name the units. Later we plan on adding some sort of user interaction with the running simulation, but for the moment it's more along the lines of watching an aquarium. We're going to try to add a user's guide to the project's Web site before the next version release. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good day, I am interested in what you made you UML diagrams in. I am = starting a project and are going to be created a lot of UML diagrams for = my thing. (its a game). I would prefer to keep it to something free. = (would it happen to be ClassBuilder?) Thank you for your time, Jeffrey Drake cod...@ho... |

Hi, I just browsed your web pages. looks impressive. Here are my comments, I do not mean to be critical, just helpful: http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net/version_history.html & other pages. the narrow green text on black background is impossible for me to read with my monitor and Netscapte default settings, because the vertical green lines of each character are only one pixel wide. I can not enlarge the text font, to make it readable (you must be specifying a fixed size font, which is bad unless the viewer has the same monitor you do.) on this page: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=3286 the link: "mars-sim-users Archives" gives: Error - List Not Found I can create additional e-mail distribution lists and web sites on the home or chapters .MarsSociety.org servers, if you want them. haven't had time to try the sim, yet. thanks, -Bruce Mackenzie (781)944-7027 |

Version 2.7 of the Mars Simulation Project is now released. It can be downloaded on the project's Web site: http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net Features include: Random mechanical failures in rovers. Periodic maintenance for rovers in settlement garages. Mechanic skill and task for people. Stuck vehicles can be slowly winched along by their crew until reaching drivable ground again. Fuel tracking in rovers and settlements. Mars globe in navigator tool renders much faster now. User configuration text files for adding rovers, settlements and people, and changing their names. The screen shots and class diagrams should be updated soon on the project Website. Scott Davis Project Administrator Mars Simulation Project http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net sc...@us... |
