Hi again, I keep on getting this error: |

Note taking, yeah. That was my next step actually. To get the personal commentary edit function back in like it is in MacSword 1. Actually not that complicated, some wotj though. But note taking could actually be more or something additional to personal commentary. I was also thinking of a full-screen function. Since Mac OSX Leopard this is relatively easy possible with the APIs for any NSView. In some time I also would like to have a time-line feature. Like a Gantt diagram where users can add events or the life span of a Patriarch or something else. Hi Vince. Hmm, that's not so easy. First of all the index is different for most of the Sword frontends. BibleDesktop uses Java Lucene and some other application use CLucene to create the index and search. Their indexes is incompatible to our Apple SearchKit index. Also some indexes can get quite large and I then creating the index is faster then downloading it. I think creating the index is not an issue if it is handled the right way. The background indexer is a good idea in my opinion for people who don't play a lot with modules and don't install loads of them. In case of on-the-fly indexing the user just needs to be aware that an index in necessary for searching and that it takes some more time on the frist search. Hi Hannes. I've detected a serios bug and had to re-upload 1.8.8. So if you downloaded before this email arrives you, please download again. Version 1.8.7 used the svn head version of SWORD which as the lead developer told me had one or two serious issues which he fixed already. Version 1.8.8 uses the fixed version so hopefully the indexing works again for you. I've made some tests with modules and downloaded all available modules from CrossWire and had the background indexer go over them. 5 of all those modules caused the application to crash, these are: Commentary: - MHC Dictionaries: - ERru_en - EReo_en - ERtr_en - ZhEnglish All others worked here or at least could be indexed. As for the crash log reporter, I'll look into that. If you don't know, MacSword writes a log file which also helps me track down issues. It is located in ~/Library/Logs/MacSword2.log I've just synched the trunk of SourceForge's subversion repo. MacSword 2 sources are under trunk, MacSword 1 sources are under branch 1.3/1.4. If you can give me your sourceforge userid (private mail), I can give you read access. You keep me busy, Hannes. :) That's good. Thanks for your feedback and testing. Please checkout the new version. It has a book and chapter index for bibles and commentaries. On-the-fly indexing should be fixed. And there is history navigation for bibles/commentaries (for now). You probably need to change the toolbar and add the new component. Also fixed the HUD. Indexing on-the-fly isn't included anymore: |

Hi Hannes. Indexing is done on-the-fly for when background indexing is switched off. For example if you have an open bible and switch to "Index" search type, type anything, the index is built automatically if it doesn't exist. That means that the first search takes longer. But I will add a requester window that asks the user if he would like to create an index instead of silently creating it so that he knows why the search takes longer. Index list for bibles, hmm. Actually I wasn't sure about what information to fill in the right sidebar for bibles. But I think listing the bible books including chapters is quite a good idea. :) Paging, what exactly do you want to see here? Do you have an example? Unfortunately I have used the subversion HEAD of the SWORD library which obviously has some bugs. I will switch back to the point release then whch does not have these problems. Sorry for that. Hi Manfred! Thanks for this quick build and implementation of some new features. Appreciate the step to remove auto index by default but now I miss a way to index single modules, maybe you can add a menu item or a contextual list item to create an index for a single module. Do you know when you will be able to add the index list for bible modules in the right sidebar just like some of the books have — or should this work already? And when do you intend to implement browsing through pages and chapters (and history)? I am very grateful and looking forward to see this. In Version 1.8.7 Reference search is obviously broken for me. "John 1" brings up Johannes 1 correctly but "Jakobus 1" (Jac 1) will display 1. Mose 1 and so do some other Reference searches — other result in a blank window or display 1. Mose 1 (As far as I can see it's mostly New Testament books) It does work when I open the previous version 1.8.6, though. Hey Hannes. Thanks for your report. This really helps a lot. Sometimes I think like: am I on the right track here with this? So feedback like your's is highly appreciated. You are indeed right, indexing some modules means trouble. The quality of the modules sometimes varies but still MacSword should be able to index all of them. I've already fixed a possible bug that I think caused one of the crashes you've sent the crash log. The otherone is a little harder since it seemes you removed a modules using the module installer and in another thread the indexer wanted to index it. So I need to add some synchronization here. The background indexing has some advantages but also some disadvantages. The advantage is you can search immidiately in all modules without waiting until the indexing is finished. Also this can be used application wide because it garanties that the index is available. On the other hand, when adding new modules, the indexing consumes a lot of CPU power. Some modules are indexed within seconds, others, with more information (like Strong's, morphs, ...) take longer. I would indeed maybe switch this feature off by default. Because you'll never know if someone installed modules from a CD or even uses the CD for modules. In that case all modules from the CD are indexed. And you are right, when removing the module, the index should also be removed. I'll add this in the todo list. Our Elberfelder and Luther modules do not contain Strong's any longer. I thought, too that the Lutrher had Strong's but it seems they disapeared. Actually MacSword2 has a separate preferences file (in Library/ Preferences) but the modules are shared. I guess this is what you mean. Indeed, I hope you'll report more. You input is very valuable. I'll try to figure out why the columns are not stored in the module installer. The next main target is the commentary editing feature. After that and if hopefully some more bugs are fixed I would like to release a beta version to a wider public. Hi Manfred! I've finally made the step from MacSword to MacSword 2 alpha for some intense personal usage. I do really love the Leopard Cocoa UI very Mail/iTunes like all in one window and the HUD for Strongs... , been waiting for this, glad you are porting it now. First thing when migrating to the alpha was I had to begin from the scratch because when I used my old preferences and installed Modules it kept crashing. So now I tried figuring out what was causing this starting from a blank installation. All was fine when I've installed some english, german Bible Texts and Dictionaries, Strongs. But as soon I begin to add some Generic Books or other special dictionaries via the Module Installer MacSword crashes — it's not only one but several modules it doesn't like. Thus I now add one at a time when I need something and then check if it will run or crash. I add a crash log for the incompatible modules: |

Hi Erik. Well, no text is displayed if you don't enter a reference. Or maybe I didn't understand what you mean? MacSword stores the session but as for the alpha version only in /tmp that means the session is removed after a reboot. I think a AppleScript interface is not that difficult. We have a Sword library wrapper in Objective-C in MacSword. An AppleScript interface would be another wrapper to the Sword wrapper which exposes functions and methods to be used from AppleScript. So you would need to learn Objective-C to do that, at least a little. If you'd like to do that you can. I will help where I can. Hey Manfred, Why is the bible text not displayed anymore? Only after entering a search text, e.g. 'Matthew', the books of 'Matthew' are displayed. I removed the preference file, removed the books, etc from the HD and re-installed, but it still does not show any text in the window. What do I do wrong? Regarding my previous question about AppleScript. I have been developing under Classic, using codewarrior, but I never dived into osx. Of course I could have a look at this and help with integrating AppleScript. Hi Erik. I wouldn't think an AppleScript interface to our Sword backend is very difficult to make. The backend is actually also only an Objective-C wrapper to the C++ Sword library functionality. Must it be AppleScript? I've heard some people use Python or Ruby with SWIG to access the Sword library. I must admit we other tasks with higher priority. You don't want to come and help with an AppleScript interface? Hallo Manfred, I have a Christian discussion group in a chat. Here I would like to make a script that can quote a bible text. I have a script for 'Word of Today' working for this group already. The highlighting/tagging feature I have in mind would allow you to select a color-coded topic and then use that to highlight a portion of text. I know this hasn't been a feature, but it would be nice, since I have pretty much swapped my physical bible for macsword. I would like be able to use separate colors to highlight favorite verses, certain topics like eschatology, promises from God, etc., and then maybe even be able to pull all of a certain topic up, like a bookmark. Does that make sense? Is that a possible new feature? And one more request, if I may... to be able to change the format of the Macsword Lookup, so I can maybe remove the parenthesis? -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-Pre-release-Alpha--tp21400637p21523329.html Sent from the MacSword-Develop mailing list archive at Nabble.com. |
