I've written instructions for Recording Jamulus with Reaper. The instructions are up on Google Docs. If you're interested, take a look, and feel free to give me feedback on how they work for you, and/or how they could be improved. I could add them to the Wiki at some point if there is interest. I'm not a recording expert and only know the basics of Reaper, any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Edit 6/21, I re-wrote the Reaper section to use Reaper's folder (submix) tool, which makes it easier to use more than two ports on your mixer/audio interface. Also using the Master Track for hardware output to your interface.

Edit 5/31, I've tested this with three different interfaces/mixers, and they all work fine:
    Behringer UMC202HD (native driver)
    Ammoon AGM04 (with ASIO4ALL)
    Behringer XR 18 (native driver)

Thanks for this, Rob. Would it be OK to add the link to this doc to the Jamulus wiki Tips & Tricks section?

Yes, absolutely. I'm going to keep working on it and hopefully make it better, and maybe someday could create a Wiki page. If you try it out and have any suggestions, let me know.

Thank you for creating this document. Does using the ReaRouteASIO driver create additional latency  for Jamulus compared to what you would normally get when using the manufacturer's ASIO driver?

I tested this real quick, and there doesn't seem to be much difference. I'm getting 21ms either way with my XR 18 mixer. I haven't tested it while recording, or using VST effects/instruments in Reaper yet.

Sounds very interesting, but which is not entirely clear to me, are all the connected clients recorded into seperated tracks or only your own connection and all the rest in one stereo track??

One stereo track. Jamulus doesn't provide individual tracks for each player in the output stream, only stereo at this point.

Oké, so if you want seperated tracks, the only way to go is start the server with the -r option ?

Yes, I think that's the case.

    Thank you Rob!

Do you think this can easily be replicated (with some common sense) in a Mac environment, too?

      Hello Harro,

ReaRoute is the Reaper ASIO driver, and only works on Windows. For Mac, some folks have been successful with Blackhole, a free audio router: https://cdm.link/2019/10/blackhole-mac-soundflower-alternative-catalina/

Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac to try this on. If you get it working, let us know!

Have followed set-up directions on W10 PC with M-Audio Fast Track audio interface. When I select ReaRoute ASIO (x64), I cannot hear anything in headphones when I connect to Jamulus. But works fine if I switch back to Fast Track ASIO. Appears to be recording with ReaRoute ASIO but I hear nothing when I play back recording.

Make sure that you have the output track routed to your hardware interface for output. Click the routing button on track 3 and verify that you added a hardware output to whatever your M-audio devie shows up as hardware-wise. Also if it wworks properly, you'll only hear output in your headphones when connected to Jamulus...

Thanks. I added hardware to the Master Track Output 1-Output 2 and was able to use Jamulus with ReaRoute ASIO and record session.

Thanks Rob!! I was looking for this for the past week. Other descriptions didn't work.

Like Mark, yours didn't work for me at first because I didn't add a hardware output (in my case Focusrite Scarlett) for the output track. Can you add this to your write-up (the current says to delete the hardware outputs for the master track). It's great to have access to the Reaper effects when playing in Jamulus.

My next modification will be to try to get my old drum machine in the mix in addition to guitar and mic. Jamulus, and Zoom, limit you to 2 outputs. However, I found a fix for my Focusrite (18i8) that allows more inputs (connect output 3 to input 1 with input 1 fed to Jamulus. Hopefully I can combine that mod with this one....

btw, anyone have a recommendation for adding FX on vocals at open mics? I'm using compression and EQ Reaper FX . They really improve my vocals.

Thanks for the feedback Mark. Yes, I can alter my instructions. By default, there is a harware output track on the master output, and if you leave it on there, you can skip the step where you add it to the recording output track (Track 3). When I setup it up the first time, I did it the way it was written in my instructions but thinking about it now, probably easier to leave it on the master.

Rob, do you think there is a way to use Reaper to send three input signals, guitar, vocals and drums to Jamulus rather than doing it using a Focusrite Control fudge? Can you send the 3 input signals to the single output you set up with ReaRoute 1 and 2? Would you have to send 2 input signals to the same ReaRoute location...for example, send VOX and guitar to ReaRoute 1 and drums to ReaRoute 2?

Tom, there is an easy way to do this. In Reaper, add a new Track 1. Then, click the Folder button on Track 1, to add the tracks below it into the folder. Each of the tracks in th folder, which in your case would be three, vocals, guitar, drums, would then be set to automatically route to Track 1 as an input. Next on the new Track 1, click Routing and un-tick master send, and add a new hardware output, ReaRoute 1 /ReaRoute 2. Then all your Tracks will route to Jamulus and your Output track - see the attached pics for an example. With this method you could have numerous inputs routing to Jamulus as a stereo feed, each with their own effects. One thing to note about the Folders button, it controls the Track below, so to ensure your Output track is not in your group, you'd use the Folder button on the last instrument track.

Hey Rob: Your a genius. It seems to work!! Will give it a go the next time I get on Jamulus. I'm learning a fair amount about Reaper as well as I work through this thanks to your assistance.

    Thanks for your time!

I hope you don't mind me asking you another question. Is there a way to route my iTunes music and/or YouTube audio into Reaper like the audio interface guitar, drum and mic inputs? I can see the audio signal registering in the Focusrite Control Screen (Monitor and Headphones Outputs and Software DAW Playback Input) but not sure if there is a way to get it into Reaper than potentially to Jamulus. Can help when our band is working on a new song. I can hear the audio in my headphones (I assume this is routed directly to the headphones) and in my monitor speaker.

Here is a screen shot of Focusrite Control showing the meter signal indicating audio from iTunes...

Tom, I'm no Reaper expert, this might be a better question to ask in the Reaper forums. I did a quick Google and found this tip on the Reaper Mania channel.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OW372qP1FE
Long story short, convert any online video to an MP3 and add it as a track.

Thanks Rob. You may be no expert but you've been very helpful. Thanks for the video. Kenny Gioia does some great videos. I've used MP3 tracks in Reaper - mostly as guide tracks when recording guitar and vocals.

I ended up figuring out how to do it. I first tried connecting my laptop headphone out to one of the AI inputs. It didn't work. However, I realized I could connect my tablet, which has my iTunes music, with a cable from the headphone jack to one of the AI inputs and then set up the routing the same way as the guitar, mic and drums. Didn't sound great at first but I switched from stereo out to mono on the tablet and now it works fine.

    Again, thanks for your help!
    Tom

Is there a way of setting up the metronome so that other people I am playing with on Jamulus can also hear it?
