Please don't keep me in suspense - where can I check out the latest kernel sources? What version are they based on? Incidentally, what the heck is up with Android anyway? The last thing I've read says that it's not even in staging anymore as of '33 - is anyone doing the dirty work of keeping Android specific kernel code up to date? C |

Hi, Thanks to everyone who came to our sprint and tested things. We got a basic kernel booting on several platforms. After looking at the results I started to look at the LCD detection code. I would like to ask everyone to run this test and send me the results. I need testers with any omap7xx phone. You only need to run a haret script and mail me the output, no kernel boot in necessary. The test scripts are here: http://al.robotfuzz.com/~al/htc/lcd1.zip You need a modified version of haret which is included. Unpack the zip to the phone's internal memory and run haret. Press the "boot" button like normal. It won't boot linux, it will run the tests instead. Your screen will flicker during the test, it is normal. It will generate lcdlog.txt. Mail that file to me or the list, along with any information you have about your phone. Especially if you have an after-market LCD, or you know what model of LCD you have for another reason. The test works by rapidly switching between LCD mode and GPIO mode on the LCD controller pins, to check which pins are tied high, low, or are floating. It does this 30 or so times. Any pin that changes value is deemed floating. The others are tied high or low (1 or 0). Ignoring floating pins (zero them) and you get a code which identifies the panel type of the phone. More about the LCD detection, including device database and log processor: https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/linwizard/wiki/LCDDetect Thanks -- Alistair Buxton a.j...@gm... |

I am unsure if this is better a users or devel question. Technically I think this is a users thing so I am posting it here. I am planning on making (unless its already done and I just didnt see it) a debian based distribution around haret+linwizard. This will be a NFS thing initially, although it can roll over into other things later on. Really the only thing that has to be done for this to work is to add portmap to the initrd so that you can mount a NFS partition with that, start it and mount. I planned on writing a linuxrc script that would detect the NFS options and do what is required to make that happen. The reason that I think doing this would be slightly better would be mainly that the NFS instructions do not work for me, it tries to mount the partition before usb0 is up, fails and panics. There is no suitable error checking that the network is up first since its all in the kernel and kernels shouldnt be doing a lot of checking, failover to something else, etc. That is not their job, and it should never be their job. This also leads to a framework where wifi modules and similar things can be loaded once they are ready and just continue down that line. This also creates a clearer separation between the distribution and the kernel work, which generally could help uptake (and thus bug testers at least) since the distribution would be whatever gets mounted (NFS or otherwise) and the initrd would just be responsible for loading modules and similar things to get the system ready to mount the real root. I already have a mostly working variant along these lines, so it will only take a day or two to get it ready if anyone is interested in testing. There are some questions that I had regarding this however. Is there a reason other than saving 2M or so for making it the way it is where the NFS stuff does not use an initrd? What is the proper way to install the packages? I couldnt find documentation on that and every tbz2 file that I downloaded had an error while untarring, which made me think that the files arent plain tar files. I am guessing they are gentoo packages and because I got the bare minimum I didnt get emerge or anything that way. Are the binaries plain arm binaries, or are they compiled specifically for the ARM926EJ-S processor? Greetings, The keyboard driver is working, what we don't have now is a good keymap. Most everything is mapped kernel side with a few exceptions. Thing is that the dotted and shifted keys need to be setup in the keymap. I'm not sure right now what the scancodes are, but for sake of illustration, let's pretend: Q = 1 A = 2 SHIFT = 3 DOT = 4 When you do shft-a The kernel sees this: press 3 press 2 release 2 release 3 This works out okay for shifted characters, because the normal keymap dictates that <shift> and <a> is a 'A' character. The keymap doesn't know that <dot> and <a> is a tilde '~'. Since the keyboard doesn't generate a different scancode for tilde I can't just put it in the kernel map. Maybe someone might be interested in working on a wizard keymap? As far as I know, there is nothing that we have in the initrd (userspace) to do this. There is an option in the kernel for framebuffer rotation which should work with the latest omap framebuffer drivers we are using, but I've never tested it, or even know how it works. But that kernel option should be a good starting point. J=C3=B6rn, Yea, everyone has been short on time, and projects like this are usually t= he=20 first to be pushed aside. Currently the git kernel repository is up. Available at=20 git://walrus.centrixpr.com/linwizard/linux-omap-2.6.git or=20 http://walrus.centrixpr.com/linwizard/linux-omap-2.6.git. I was in the=20 process of merging the changes from the patches on the sourceforge site int= o=20 the current tree, but as I was doing that I noticed that most things are=20 already in, and the way it's currently done in the kernel is more elegant=20 than what was happening in the linwizard patch series. As a result there is no defconfig for the wizard. From a technical=20 standpoint the kernel should run on the wizard but I haven't picked through= =20 and made a .config file by hand and tested it. If anyone has the time / is willing to do that work it would be a big help= =2E =20 Also if there are things that were working before that arn't working now (n= ot=20 configuration issues) they need to be tracked down. Sourceforge has a=20 bugtracker that we can use. I try to be on irc (irc.freenode.net #linwizard) as much as possible, and = I'm=20 going to try to keep conversation flowing here on the lists. If you are=20 maintinaing the wiki, maybe you would be willing to keep the rest up to dat= e? =20 If you are let me know, so the news/updates can trickle down to the outside= =20 world. Anyways, the project isn't dead yet, and I am keeping the repo up to date= =20 with upstream and there is progress. Slow progress, but progress. Best regards to all. Phil, Wow, that's excellent. I'm really amazed by the interest and support in th= e=20 project recently. I recently took control of the project again and am=20 working on integrating the linwizard kernel with the linus / montevista=20 branches. There has been a LOT of interest lately, and between personal li= fe=20 and professional life I've been doing everything I can to help move things= =20 along. There are a few people that are hanging out regularly on #linwizard on=20 irc.freenode.net and I've been trying to get things rolling. Everyone has=20 been very helpful, and I send my thanks to everyone that has expressed=20 interest in this project. I had planned on making an official announcement to the lists as well as=20 revamping the web presence as soon as the kernel tree was stable, but that'= s=20 taking longer than expected. So here we are. If you're reading this and are interested please reply, I'= ll=20 try to help in any way possible to make the Wizard (and related) a full=20 featured linux smartphone! Standard story: I have a Wizard, I want it to do Linux magic instead of Wince patheticness. Less standard story: Consider the gauntlet laid down, and a prize available. I want to see the touchscreen and D-pad working. So here's a £50 (that's $100) start to a W-prize (not really enough to be an X prize, I'll admit) for *each* of those, out of my pocket. Get either of those working (and supply all code etc necessary), to the satisfaction of Maui and the list, and the cash is yours. I want you guys to understand that there are people like me out there who are very willing to do what is necessary to get Linux on the Wizard, even though we're not coders. If you're reading this and willing to add your cash or other offerings to the pile, let's make it even more interesting. This is your boot up the proverbial - let's see something other than that inane blue screen when we press the power button, eh? Phil H (imagin8or/i8or) |
