Hi all! Thanks Svetljo for the tips on module-init-tools and the patch to Nvidia! Still got some probs. but I can't tell where these originate: 1. Starting xdm I get a failure of X with "cannot open /dev/tty0". But when I login and start xdm manually, it starts. 2. The files I am using are: http://home.planet.nl/~woerk095/XF86Config-4 , Xservers.0 and Xservers.1. On 2.4.21 usually I start 1 server with xdm (Xservers.0) then login in and do in a shell: /usr/bin/nice -10 startx -- /usr/X11R6/bin/X1 :1 -layout X1 -prefbusid 0:11:0 vt9 & Then switch to vc1 to get rid of the garbage, switch back, log out and login again as somebody else. I can start xdm with the one server on 2.6.0 and start the other server but when I log out the other server disappears again. 3.Starting xdm with 2 servers is the same: it won't do it automatically (no tty0) but will when logged in. Then only one xdm logon appears, when you type something on it, it disappears and the other appears. 4.There are no serial devices. 5. I don't know if it is supposed to work but I cannot get framebuffers to work at all. On a (non-Bruby sys) I usually do on LILO boot append: vga=794 append=" hdc=ide-scsi apm=on video=vesa:font:SUN12x22" Even when I change it to vesafb, which I saw on Google, result is a blank screen. I still use dumbcon=2 on the boot append on 2.6.0. I used ruby-260t6-20030930.diff on 2.6.0-test6. The only things I change in the .config is add the soundmodule (which gets an error on modprobe) and CONFIG_USB_UHCI_HCD=m. Thanks! Hugo. Hi Mark: I use, like you I think, a choice of 3 boot options: 1 user, 2 users with xdm and xinerama. This is with Debian Sarge and Fvwm and 2.4.21. What do I buy with upgrading to a later kernel? 1 user and 2 user both have dumbcons=3D1 so I had to invent another variable to kick off the right server: there are 3. I usually use 1 user, which is the boot default. Because then I can startx in xterm, start the user in the left console manually and I have vc's available then, provided you do it right with switching to F1 immediately to get rid of the garbage. If you boot with 2 users you use xdm but then there are no vc's. This is what I have in xdm: :0 local usr/bin/nice -n -10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X0 :0 -layout X0 -deferglyphs 16 -prefbusid 1:0:0 vt7 :1 local usr/bin/nice -n -10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X1 :1 -layout X1 -deferglyphs 16 vt9 Everything works with the default XF86Config-4, which has a BusId for each device, that is all. I cannot really explain why I have to have the prefbusid for vt7, but if not, X hangs. I have no idea how xinerama works. (I have not tried the dynamic server switcher). I get fvwm on both monitors but cannot do anything on the left and both look identical. I unfortunately cannot find a good fvwm xinerama example, but it would be academic anyway: Bruby beats the pants out of any scheme. Why this isn't toted as the premier Linux solution beats me: it would beat any microshaft solution, can you imagine: opensource and as many monitors as you want on one pc? And here every internet caf=E9 and classroom has 1 pc per user and nobody knows better... Regards, Hugo. PS. If you want a copy of the servers.x and XF86Config-4, let me know. ---- Begin Original Message ---- From: Mark Hurenkamp <mar...@xs...> Sent: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 21:14:40 +0200 To: lin...@li... Subject: XDM configuration Hi, I've been using backstreet ruby for a while now, and it works great for me, and also the new 2.6 patch works better than anything I've tried before. I've got 2 X sessions working fine in parallel using different layouts in XF86config. I start them using "startx -- :<screen> -layout <name>" and that works fine. However, since all this is working properly for some time now, I would really like to get the xdm sessions to work, but I'm still experiencing problems with that. I have the following content in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers: (and the same in the kdm config) # $Xorg: Xserv.ws.cpp,v 1.3 2000/08/17 19:54:17 cpqbld Exp $ # # Xservers file, workstation prototype # # This file should contain an entry to start the server on the # local display; if you have more than one display (not screen), # you can add entries to the list (one per line). If you also # have some X terminals connected which do not support XDMCP, # you can add them here as well. Each X terminal line should # look like: # XTerminalName:0 foreign # #:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86-head1 -layout head1 vt7 :1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86-head2 -layout head2 vt17 However, when I start xdm, what happens is that X is started on the second screen, but no login prompt appears. I think the problem is xdm related, since if I remove the :1 line, it starts on the first screen, and the login prompt does appear. Does anyone here have a clue what I'm doing wrong? Hi, I have been looking into the most suitable way of implementing a keyboard driver for our custom device. The hardware is a 5 button keypad that is hooked up directly to the GPIO lines on the processor. What confuses me the most with the 2.4.18 kernel I'm using is there are two ways of implementing the driver. The majority of the drivers in drivers/char are written in the old way but there is also a partial implementation of the new USB input subsystem that simplifies the driver code a great deal. Can anyone tell me if the USB input subsystem on the 2.4.18 is suitable for a non-USB input device? Do I need a patch before I can use this subsystem? The Dreamcast keyboard driver adapted its code from usb/usbkbd.c, is this a good starting point for my keypad driver as well? I really hope I can use the new framework since it will safe me from writing code for the old framework and then rewriting it later when it's removed in a future kernel. I wondered if someone might be able to tell me why the pcspkr routine has not been fixed in the 2.6.0-testxx kernels? If you're not sure what I'm talking about on any of the systems I'vee tried a bell tone or any other tone produced by that routine does not shut off after starting. I use that routine fairly heavily to produce audio feedback for blind users but currently cannot even build it into the kernel. Out of curiosity why was it changed in the first place? It isn't really an input routine is it? I will fix it if someone else has not but I thought maybe someone has already done a patch which just hasn't made it into the kernel tree yet. Hi! Now 2.4.22 version works like 2.6 CVSed. /dev/tty0 - current console VGA console /dev/tty1-16 DUMMY /dev/tty17 DUMMY /dev/tty18 /dev/tty0 may be redirect to current console, but not allways. current tty redirecting perform according attached tty of process. Sample, gpm, console mouse service, has not attached tty. If process has not attached tty, then it got /dev/tty1 as current tty. This feature is buggy for gpm :-( You can select in the any console, but paste into tty1 only. Because gpm see wrong current tty, gpm will not leave mouse device, when X server starts. So mouse freezy under X, if gpm is active. http://startx.times.lv/bruby-2.4.22-20031007.diff.bz2 Aivils Stoss |

At least rh8.0 will not work with vanilla linux kernel. As experiment You can remove "system logger" in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. Before You can test vanilla linux under rh9.0. RedHat uses heavy patched kernels. If rh9.0 will not work with linux-vanilla kernel, then it will not work with linux-ruby :-( Aivils |

I compiled the vanilla kernel-2.4.22 without the bruby patch and booted it without any problems. When I applied the bruby patch to kernel-2.4.22 and successfully compiled it, I then tried booting it, which then worked. But I got some error messages when it tried loading the usb support modules and then when it starts loading system services(1st of which is the system logger), it stopped displaying anything on the screen. My PS/2 keyboard lets me type with the text appearing on the screen, but nothing else happens. --- hugo vanwoerkom <hug...@ca...> wrote: > Hi, > > I noticed your first post a couple of days ago. > I cannot give any firsthand info because I don't > use RH9 nor the 2.4.22 patch. I can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and the system > switches to runlevel 6. please try to catch the boot messages trough serial console, see [linux source]/Documentation/serial-console.txt if you have web space put the captured messages & the kernel configuration file uncompressed there (for easy online reading) if not send them per mail compressed i assume you didn't use the default red-hat kernel configuration and that could be the reason, but without more info, can not say anything :-) (so please also try to rebuild the bruby kernel with the default for redhat configuration file) best, svetljo PS. until you get bruby running, do move "/bin/sysfont" to "/bin/sysfont.bak" or similar, to avoid oopses for clear messages, later we'll fix the problem in one or other way :-) -- NEU FÜR ALLE - GMX MediaCenter - für Fotos, Musik, Dateien... Hi, I noticed your first post a couple of days ago. I cannot give any firsthand info because I don't use RH9 nor the 2.4.22 patch. (Debian + 2.4.21 patch) What I would try is either of 2 things: another distrib or another patch. If (1) is difficult, try the 2.4.21 patch. I stand to be corrected but I don't think your prob. has to do with Bruby but with the distrib. I presume the patch went on without errors and the kernel compiled clean too and you have switched kernels before on RH9? Regards, Hugo. The following signature is automatically added by the web email service I use, which is beyond my control: ======================================= Help the planet each day! i applied the backstreet ruby patch (2.4.22-20030910) against a vanilla copy of linux-2.4.22 that I got from kernel.org, and was able to compile and install the resulting kernel. The system I am running this on is i686 redhat9. The kernel loads, but once it starts init, I get some error messages about the usb support (I have connected a usb & PS/2 keyboard), and then i see a message that says "starting system logger", the first of my system services, but I don't see the resulting ok/fail message, nor any other output. My PS/2 keyboard works, so I can type letters and they appear on the screen. But nothing else seems to happen. I can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and the system switches to runlevel 6. I have tried putting a line in my inittab just before the line that starts the sysinit scripts, to run mingetty on tty2, thinking that maybe then I could get into a shell and see whats going on. But when I do that, I get a message from init, just before the message about the system logger (above), that says that it is respawning to fast and is disabled for 5 minutes. Any thoughts as to what I can try to fix this? I need to get a dual X server system running soon :) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Hi Aivils, first test run of your ruby-2.6 and everything seems to work really good :-) this was actually with test4 on my main PC, will report later how does it play with mga( i have to first reinstall MDK cooker on it) * hotplug is working :-) - small adjustment needed for the PHYS id's of usb device: 2.6 -> usb-0000:00:10.1-.... 2.4 -> usb-00:10.1-.... * fbcon is working nicely too - i assume the vodoo fb driver is to blame for your cursor problems here everything is OK with a radeon 7500 - fbcon reports unresolved symbols if compiled as module - vc_count & 16 VC's for VGA console : one should adjust vt[x] in dm configuration on switching from 2.4 to 2.6 and reverse ? could this be integrated in 2.4 too, so no changes in the configuration are needed ? loading rivafb (for my Geforce4) doesn't take over fbcon on the radeon (built in) > fbcon right now can serve only one framebuffer device driver > correctly. > Real multiuser, where each fb device has a keyboard, will be added in > future. > If You will test this code, then please select one fb device driver only. > In > my case, fbcon works with Voodoo3.
