I connected a 2nd PS2 keyboard in place of my PS2 mouse, so I now have 2 PS2 keyboards. I configured hotplug and input.rc/input.agent, and using input.rc I can control which of my 2 keyboards goes on VT0 or VT1. I start my first X on vt06, and it runs just fine(though temporarily w/o a mouse). The first X is set to use the keyboard assigned to VT0, and it does. I set my second X to use the VT1 keyboard by using the "Dev Phys" option and setting it to isa0060/serio1/input0. I set it to use the evdev driver. From what I've read, doing that would normally require applying a patch to XFree86, but apparently that is already applied to the XFree86 shipped with debian? though I'm not sure if that applies to debian woody, the distribution I'm running. Then I try starting my second X on vt08, which I've set to use the keyboard assigned to VT1. I've tried starting the second X either by running the server directly (ie 'X :1 -xf86config /etc/X11/XFC_1 vt08') and by running a modified startx script (startx1). Now, with either one, I don't see anything on the screen, its just black, no cursor, the monitor did come out of sleep mode, though. Also, I can press CAPS lock and NUM lock on the VT1 keyboard and the appropriate light does appear on the VT1 Keyboard. But, also as before, the VT0 keyboard doesn't work. When I type, nothing appears on 1st screen, nor does pressing CAPS lock or NUM lock cause a light to come on. My first X is running KDE which I have set to display a clock in the lower right corner. Once I start my second X, the clock on the first X doesn't update, even after several minutes. I sshed into the machine from another and tried loading konsole on the 2nd X, but got an error message that it couldn't connect to it. I then tried loading konsole onto the first X, it seemed to be running, but nothing appeared on that screen(much like the clock not updating). I have also tried using the "Dev Phys" option with the 'evdev' driver on my first X, which also causes the same problem (screen goes black, can't be contacted by an X client). Is it possible there is something wrong w/ evdev or that it is not installed? Even though I continue to have these problems with X, my keyboards ONLY work on the second X I start, why? Why does the screen on my first X not update? I started my kernel with 'dumbcon=2' In the event I do have to apply the 'evdev' patch mentioned in the 'how to', do I apply that to the XFree86 source code? which version? :) --- Aivils Stoss <Aiv...@un...> wrote: > > >I appreciate your help, but I still haven't been > able > >to get this to work. Hi all! Thanks guys for getting this to work! Problem was that I called the 2nd server vt9 instead of vt17! Problems that I see: 1. Garbage is still around when starting other X from xterm of 1st X. 2. No framebuffer for my TNT2 + GeForce4 :( Are vc's supposed to work when starting 2 servers at once? I can use Ctrl-Alt Fx from the first display but it only shows a blank screen. 2.6.0 problems: 1. The wheel of my mouse doesn't work 2. No sound: no soundcards found 3. lm-sensors still has no 2.6.0 support I'll google around for those. Thanks again! Hugo. Hi! I ran with the Aivils's CVS tarball. The serial devices prob. was my configuration: forgot to specify serial drivers. tty0 problem is now gone. No matter what I do I cannot get framebuffers to work: I think it is a Lilo + 2.6.0 problem: I have to specify vga=791 or so, because otherwise he starts in character mode. Then I see vaguely a logo and garbage. But no combination suggested thusfar works: everything stops with a blank screen. I still cannot use 2 x servers. Either one or the other hangs up. What are the vt numbers that you are supposed to use with the CVS tarball? What I use now is here: http://home.planet.nl/~woerk095/XF86Config-4 http://home.planet.nl/~woerk095/Xservers.0 http://home.planet.nl/~woerk095/Xservers.1 The garbage problems is gone and I have my leds back again on X0 which I use with netleds on to see web traffic. Connot use the wheel on the mouse though: X0.log shows no errors... Think that's it. Thanks Aivils for the CVS stuff! Hugo. Hi Svetljo, I've been reading your howto again (also because I want to tweak more on my system now, like the arts deamon, and I've installed gdm, which looks great on Gentoo b.t.w. :-), here are my findings: In section 1.1: kernel 2.4 & 2.5 patches are mentioned, perhaps you can add reference to 2.6 patches as well? In section 4.4.: Under Backstreet Ruby, each console is represented by 8 tty's: VGA: tty0 to tty7 DUMB1: tty8 to tty15 DUMB2: tty16 to tty23 I think this is outdated, if I understand correctly, it should now read: current console: tty0 VGA: tty0 to tty16 DUMB0: tty17 DUMB1: tty18 etc. (at least on my 2.6 system I'm using tty7 & tty17 as consoles) In section 6.1 you can add: Gentoo uses: /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers for xdm /usr/kde/<kde version>/share/config/kdm/Xservers for kdm And in section 6.2: Gentoo uses: /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf for gdm I'll get back to you when I've got my artsd & input agent running ;-) > > Modified X server binary for Gentoo (based on 4.3.0-r2 package) > > can be found here (2Mb): > > http://hoth.xs4all.nl/~hurenkam/linuxconsole/XFree86-prefid > > this could probably go to Aivils web site :-) > + available to those that haven't read the howto > + available from 5 mirrors (in Latvia,Germany, UK ,USA > > please send me also Gentoo version, gcc & glibc version > and i'll write to Aivils or you can also write him I'm running Gentoo-1.4rc1, but I keep it up-to-date, which means it's comparable to what you can download/install right now. gcc version 3.2.3 (Gentoo package gcc-3.2.3-r1) glibc version 2.3.2 (Gentoo package glibc-2.3.2-r2) > > I also created a package (62Mb), but haven't tested it, I just > > took the binary before I packaged it: > > http://hoth.xs4all.nl/~hurenkam/linuxconsole/xfree-4.3.0-r2.tbz2 > > > > Beware, I have a slow uplink (~15kb/s), so if I can put it elsewhere > > that would be nice :-) > > it's a source right? > i was afraid of that( that was the only thing that poped in my head when > you mentioned gentoo) > the problem is that i also don't have much web space and it's not a very > fast link :( No, it is not source, it's a binary package (like normal .rpm), but packaged for Gentoo ebuild system. If I have some time to play around, I'll see if I can get a modified ebuild script put together so that people can build their own XFree using the gentoo ebuild command. (That's a rather new area for me, so it may take a while before I figure it out :-( ) > have you worked with rpm? can't you prepare a package similar to my XFree > source rpm's > my src rpms look like: > - we need a compiled XFree tree in the rpm build directory > - we link the XF tree to a new durectory (lndir -silent -ignorelinks) > - patch the new directory, cd to xc/programs/Xserver && make > - then install only the additional modified binary Sounds pretty much like what I did on my Gentoo system... :-) > do you think you can make similar package under gentoo? I'll try the ebuild first (that's gentoo native after all :-), if I can't get it to work, I'll try the rpm approach (which is just as new to me :-( ). Regards, Mark. |

Aivils, (and anyone else that is running ruby-2.6 or latest bruby) could you check http://varna.demon.co.uk/~svetlio/ruby-contrib/how-to/XFree_local_multi-user-HOWTO/ and give me feedback/ comments/ additions on the ruby-2.6 & new bruby changes (other comments are also welcomed :-) ) best, svetljo PS. Aivils i do know that ruby supports multiple fbconsoles already ( thanks :-) ) but i think i should send first this update for the VC per VT changes in newer bruby, and ruby-2.6 , and once i have more experiance with the new multiple fbcon make a new update -- NEU FÜR ALLE - GMX MediaCenter - für Fotos, Musik, Dateien... I have since dumped redhat and switched to debian. The backstreet ruby kernel that I compiled worked, and after some struggle, I was able to get the nvidia kernel module to compile and load and function with XFree86, and I can now run 2 copies of XFree86 simultaneously displayed. The problem that I have is that I have 1 PS/2 keyboard and 1 PS/2 mouse, I want the first copy of XFree86 to use them, and the second copy of XFree86 to run without a keyboard or mouse. But, whichever is the second XFree86 instance(which is running on vt08) to start, blocks the keyboard and mouse so that it only works on that XFree86, I can't swich to any other vt. This even happens when I disable the mouse & keyboard drivers for the second XFree86 configuration file by changing the driver to "void". I've tried starting the 2 xfree86 servers in different orders without any change. Thus, because of this problem, I can't really run 2 XFree86 servers effectively, b/c when I start up the 2nd one, I can't continue to use the first one, or switch to its vt. Maybe this is a bruby kernel problem? --- Svetoslav Slavtchev <sv...@gm...> wrote: > > how do I get the messages? especially when I can't > get > > a system running on the kernel to do anything? > > please try to setup serial console as described in > [linux source]/Documentation/serial-console.txt > > > I did add 'above hid usbcore' to > /etc/modules.conf, > > but still get the error messages. > > which was ? > > > Earlier you mentioned I should backup the file > > /bin/sysfont, but I don't have a file with that > name. > > If this causes a problem, it doesn't cause one > with > > the redhat kernel that my system normally runs on. > > this file should exist, its use to set the console > font, > it works OK with standard kernel, but not with bruby > kernel > i'm not sure wether the problem is in the file or > the > way it's called from the init scripts, but on > standard > installlation of Red Hat 8 or 9 this file causes > oopses with > bruby kernel > > > If this file's absence is the source of the > problem, > > perhaps you could reply with a copy of it. Hi All!
I have got runnig fbdev, where each framebuffer device has his own VT
and number of VC. For test I use Voodoo Graphic, Voodoo2, Voodoo3 video
adapters. Voodoo Graphic and Voodoo2 are designed as secondary video
adapters,
so i have not troubles with initializing.
For tests all fbdev low level drivers and fbcon must be compiled
straight into kernel. Current modules isn't supported.
fbcon must have kernel commandline option:
fbcon=vt:toc.5.7
which mean, fbcon creates three VT, 1st VT take over admin_vt (VGA
console),
2nd VT has 5 VCs, 3rd VT has 7 VCs. 1st VT uses /dev/fb0, 2nd VT - /dev/fb1
3rd VT - /dev/fb2. If fbdev low level drivers is located into kernel, then
fb
init order is hardcoded in fbmem.c . If /dev/fb1 need take over admin_vt,
then
simple change command line:
fbcon=vt:5.toc.7
If You needs for login promt on secondary fbdev, then You must run
aditional
mingetty on right ttyXX. You can run multiple mingetty on secondary fbdev.
Switching to next vc is ordinary Atl-Fx or Atl-LeftArrow, Alt-RightArrow.
In abstract dual head video adapters , which create fbdev for each head,
must
be ready for linux-ruby. Dual head adapter register /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb1
and
after fbcon set up VT for each /dev/fbXX. I have not any practical results.
On second fbdev XFree86 must have option vtXX, otherwise xf86 uses free vc
on
VT0.
Results:
Voodoo1/Voodoo2/Voodoo3 - runs nice.
Voodoo3, AtiRagePro - blank screen on Ati.
NvidiaTNT2 - oopses only.
OOPSES:
various outside ruby related code (i think so).
redundant mingetty on VTless tty lead oopses series - ruby related.
Seems we should wait for more stable 2.6.0-blah-blah
Changes commited 14-OKT-2003
Remake it all modular - work in progress.
Low level driver compatibility with linux-ruby - ask James.
