Hi List! I tried the 6629 nVidia driver and it's a mess. Gdm starts and shows a more or less black screen. Went back to 6111. Lots of negative comments in the forum. Anybody tried that here? It might not use the vm86 mode but it initializes both Radeons just fine. Lately, I recompiled XOrg with Ben Herrenschmidt's Radeon fixes, and there is a new driver option called "VGAAccess" and I switched it off on one of the cards. It solved the only thing left that annoyed me using multihead: logging off on :0 blanked :1. Changing resolution brought it back, but now it's not needed. Best regards, Zolt=E1n B=F6sz=F6rm=E9nyi |

I tried booting a 64-bit ruby kernel today. Userspace is still debian i386 though. The second display failed, because the video adapter need bios initialization. I got this in my dmesg: XFree86: vm86 mode not supported on 64 bit kernel So what to do? Is it fixable by installing a X compiled for amd64? Or do I need to find a video card that doesn't need any bios initialization? Helge Hafting |

I've used ruby for i386 successfully. But I've got an opteron now, so I want to compile a 64-bit kernel. I followed debian's guide for setting up cross-compiling, but the compile itself ended like this: In file included from arch/x86_64/ia32/ia32_ioctl.c:19: fs/compat_ioctl.c: In function `do_fontx_ioctl': fs/compat_ioctl.c:1616: error: `cfdarg' undeclared (first use in this function) fs/compat_ioctl.c:1616: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once fs/compat_ioctl.c:1616: error: for each function it appears in.) Any ideas? Or is 2.6.9 "too old" now? Helge Hafting |

Do you have a solution dual-head (displays independent) with a Radeon 9200SE? I am searching a solution with this video card already some time and i only obtained to use the Xinerama. That driver uses none of the cards accelearation features, only the graphichs memory. It was fast enough for 2D work like word processing and 2D gaming anyway. Very light 3D stuff worked too, using software rendering. The first head used the matrox driver with all features and nice speed. I also tried to use two instances of the accelerated driver on this single card. That actually works - by luck I guess, but still. I didn't go for that solution because 3D didn't work at all, only accelerated 2D. These days I'm using two cards, with a radeon 9200SE in addition to the G550. This allows accelerated 2D and 3D on both heads. Unfortunately, the radeon driver in debian is quite buggy and hangs that X server a lot of the time. So I'll probably have to replace the card. >have a Matrox G200 MMS Quad, which gives you 4 separate bus IDs for >the 4 different monitors, but I can't seem to get prefbusid to address >any monitor except for the primary (first) one. > > > Did you get prefbusid working in a test with actual separate cards? Experiment with that first. If it doesn't work, then you might need a different xserver. Not all of them support prefbusid. Some, such as debian, want "isolatedevice" instead of "prefbusid". Also, some hardware drivers just don't work in dual/quad setups, this limits what cards one can use. Cards having separate bus IDs ought to behave just as a bunch of separate cards, but you never know if they cut some corners supporting this somewhat unusual feature. >I'm trying to get as many as 6 or 8 touchscreens running from one PC, >so I would really like to be able to use dual or quad head cards so I >don't run out of PCI slots. Has anyone had any success getting multiple separate instances of X to run on separate screens of a quad or even dual-head graphics card? I have a Matrox G200 MMS Quad, which gives you 4 separate bus IDs for the 4 different monitors, but I can't seem to get prefbusid to address any monitor except for the primary (first) one. I'm trying to get as many as 6 or 8 touchscreens running from one PC, so I would really like to be able to use dual or quad head cards so I don't run out of PCI slots. Has anyone had success with any dual or quad head cards? If so, send me your recommendations, and maybe a copy of your config files too if you're feeling generous. dave. |

No extended keys at all, no GUI, except on 3279's that would draw vectors like SVGZ. Reason also for Ruby rather than LAN with another PC on it. Can't teach an old dog new tricks... Thanks. Nowadays we have keyboards with lots of additional , extented keys (me have 22 multimedia keys). During year 2000 one of this project administrator create Linux input event system. This event system up to this day is used very rarely by some Xfree86 drivers only. Exists keyboard tracker too. I decided create "one key press launcher". In production system we use only 3 keys: Power - launch netscape, Sleep - launch xmms, Weekup - launch xterm, that is on PS/2 kbd. Exists lots of small utils what cat do lots of "multimedia" jobs. Sample: aumix for sound adjusting. Nothing is ruby related, just historical bonds with this project. Aivils |

Why trouble pop up under Linux-ruby , > but not under Linux at all ? > If this is wide trouble, then You should notify kernel mailing list. > > Aivils There is trouble in Linux but it seems that they quite rare and maybe they are taken as hardware problems or incompatibilities, I've seen a post in the Kernel list pointing the same but no answer was given. The problems i mention about the davicom card were found months before i ever installed ruby but i simply changed the card, but testing the patched kernel i found that it worked with the fix removed. Also until this patch i haven't been able to run a multi head config with more than 2 (sometimes not even 2) nvidia cards , no matter if using Ruby-Linux or simply Linux but after the patch there is no trouble, but who was going to report this as a pci bug when every xinerama howto says that it may or may not work and that some cards mix better than others?. With some other brands of cards it seems that a xserver normally has no trouble to work but when running with the isolate patch (which is more related to pci than to ruby) more than 2 equal cards the system freezes. I also found something that may be unrelated but in the pci id list in sourceforge and in the kernel 2.6.9 the definition of component 8086:244e, which is a pci bridge and is present in both motherboards, has changed but those definitions are there only to show the names instead of the numbers of the components. Looking in the kernel list it seems the fix creates similar troubles (in this motherboards) to those that it was mean to fix, anyway just removing the code might be dangerous since all components in the board have this: dev->device & 0xff00) == 0x2400 and i don't know how will this affect to other components, my system have been running without trouble for about a month with this. |

Can You show more details. Why trouble pop up under Linux-ruby , but not under Linux at all ? If this is wide trouble, then You should notify kernel mailing list. Aivils |

Hi After a lot of trouble i was able to make ruby work perfectly with an intel 865gbf and 865perl motherboards, this was after apliying this patch to the kernel: diff -Naur linux-2.6.8/arch/i386/pci/fixup.c linux-2.6.8.orig/arch/i386/pci/fixup.c --- linux-2.6.8/arch/i386/pci/fixup.c 2004-08-14 00:37:26.000000000 -0500 +++ linux-2.6.8.orig/arch/i386/pci/fixup.c 2004-11-19 00:30:59.000000000 -0600 @@ -191,9 +191,9 @@ */ static void __devinit pci_fixup_transparent_bridge(struct pci_dev *dev) { - if ((dev->class >> 8) == PCI_CLASS_BRIDGE_PCI && + /*if ((dev->class >> 8) == PCI_CLASS_BRIDGE_PCI && (dev->device & 0xff00) == 0x2400) - dev->transparent = 1; + dev->transparent = 1;*/ } /* What i've found is that this fix was intended for the first motherboards with this pci bridges but (i845 i think) but it seems in newer motherboards the problem has changed, this also solved a problem with a Davicom 21x4x ethernet card and some non ruby dual x configurations, of course with such a complicated patch there is a chance that some system burn in flames, but i hope someone more qualified can give a better solution. Hope this helps someone. |

Hi All! X - X windows system K - Linux kernel E - Events as well INTRODUCTION ------------ xke is userspace program which is capable read and recognize Linux kernel generated events of input devices. xke translate Linux kernel events and send to X windows system. Main goal is keyboar multimedia key utilization. As input xke uses /dev/input/eventXX device files. As output xke uses Xtst.so library alias Xtest extension. xke uses unified Linux input event system. xke don't care what input device is connected in the box. From point of view of xke differs only device name and some parmeters. So xke satisfactory works with keyboard, mouse and tablet. xke can connect to local X server any time when end-user will do it, because use Xtst library. End-user may start and stop xke during X sesion and use user specific settings. Right now xke maps key press/release events to generate key (key-press/release) series launch programs generate mouse motions generate button-press/release Button press and x y axis motion events will be sended to X "unchanged". xke is a merge and rewrite from the programs: evdev XFree86 driver by Zephaniah E. Since Nvidia print in their README "improved PCI Express" i hope about full success as before. I say "almost" because now the SuperTux lowered the framerate, > pretty much visibly. I haven't experimented more. PCI is slower by default. In my end glxgears schows similar reasults. Unloaded box - PCI is 2x slower. mplayer takes 2x more CPU on PCI. Troble hides in the 2.6.X task scheduler which one do not care how evenly cpu is distributed over a very short timespace, and yes, 2.6 does not do=20 this well. By default 2.6 uses 100msec timeslices for each process. If You have 2 tasks, then each have 5 moves per second. This case is very ugly for video games. As solution is nice +19 usage. In nice +19 case task schedule gives only 10msec for task as maximal timeslice. So if You start user1>nice -n +19 game1 user2>nice -n +19 game2 both games run smooth, but never as under 2.4.XX . i cannot explain technical essence, but this is gamer feeling. 2.6.XX bump off WineX, which becames slower, choppy. > > So, in summare, my second question is; Does anyone know if the future d= ual=20 > > PCI-express (or PCI-express + AGP port) motherboards (such as the VIA=20 > > K8T890Pro or nvidia Nforce 4 SLI) will work with linux and the ruby pat= ch in=20 > > particular to set up a multi-console system using fast gfx cards?=20 >=20 > They should work. Who knows. For AGP we have hardcoded code in the kernel for each mobo vendo= r. In the Nvidia case this code seems exists in the binary driver, i hope so because Nvidia anounce PCI Express support (which mobo? reference board?). Aivils |
