Dear friends: Many greetings! I have created a dualhead in FC1 (thanks to Zoli). But I am trying to create one in Debian/Debian-based distro SimplyMEPIS. Before proceeding I have a few questions: 1) I have installed LTSP (ltsp.org) and three different terminals are being used in the current machine (PIII 1GHz 256MB). Could the ltsp and multihead coexist in the same machine? Anyone has experience? 2) I have seen instructions for debian multihead at http://www.c3sl.ufpr.br/fourhead/howto-en.php but it does not mention of the pci_isolate_device_feature.diff (http://www.ltn.lv/~aivils/files/080_pci_isolate_device_feature.diff) as stated in Aivils' site (http://www.ltn.lv/~aivils/eng-down.html). Any idea? 3) Whether it is necessary to make changes in the display manager? In my current SimplyMEPIS (debian-based) distro, I am using kdm. When creating multihead with FC1, I do remember that I made changes at gdm.conf under [servers]. 4) I have acquired with much difficulty a PCI VGA card from Tseng labs (ET6000 22a26K650). Does anyone have any experience about this card working with multihead? 5) May I have some contacts or sites which is peculiarly working on the 64-bit linux multiheads? Of course I know my dear friend Zoli from Hungary who has been active in FC3, but I want to know more who has been involved in debian or debian-based distros. Thanking you for your time and cooperation. May all of you be successful in your missions, prosperous, free from sufferings, health, happy, and in peace, always! I noticed that in /drivers/char/keyboard.c in kd_mksound 2 tests for SND_TONE and SND_BELL always both are true. So I changed line 3564 in your rc3 patch to "else if" instead of "if" and pitch is back. Regards, Hugo __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Vineesh wrote: >Hi, > Is there any usefull link which describes the Multi head setup with >frame buffers under the 2.6.9 or 2.6.7 and fedora core3 ? >regards > vineesh > > Take a look at archives for this mailing list, you'll find descriptions for such a setup except that it isn't for fedora core3. It isn't all that hard, assuming you already know how to set up an xserver for fc3. Hardware: Two sets of keyboards & mice, connected to the pc somehow. A dualhead card, such as a G550. Note that not all dualhead cards supports a framebuffer for the second head, but the matrox happens to do so. Software: A kernel with the ruby patch, and framebuffer support turned on for the second head. Optionally use fbcon for the second head, but this may be broken. A xserver. A plain xserver will do for a dualhead setup on a G550. A setup with two graphichs cards has an added requirement: a xserver with the prefbusid/isolatedevice patch. This is not necessary with only one "device". Setup: Compile the patched kernel, and boot it. Verify that the second keyboard attach to VT17 by issuing cat /dev/tty17 Then check to see that you get some text by typing it in at the other keyboard and press enter on it. Don't proceed until this works, you may have to experiment with the "dumbcon" kernel parameter. First head: Install ordinary xserver support for the card. Make sure you don't use the second head too, don't run xinerama. Second head: If you're using a matrox, it probably shows the same desktop as the first head. Get the "matroxset" utility and use it so the second head shows the second framebuffer. (It is not initialized yet, so it will probably be black or full of crazy lines.) Note that the first xserver use the config file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (x.org use a different name) Make a copy, such as XF86Config-4-fbdev in the same directory. Then modify it to be a config file for your second head: In the InputDevice section, change the mouse device to whatever device your second mouse uses instead of the first. In the Device section, specify the framebuffer driver instead of the matrox driver. Like this: Driver "fbdev" Option "UseFBDev" "true" Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb/1" Finally, set up your system to start the second xserver. FC3 probably does this a bit different than debian which I use. Find wherever your default xserver is started (gdm? xdm? kdm?) and add an entry for the second server. My first xserver starts with such a command: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt7 -deferglyphs 16 -nolisten tcp -dpi 100 and the second one like this: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt17 -deferglyphs 16 -nolisten tcp -xf86config XF86Config-4-fbdev For testing purposes, try this last command on the command line. Optimization: It makes sense to run a font server such as xfs, and _not_ let the xservers handle fonts themselves. After all, you're running two xservers now but both can use the same fontserver. Having both xservers handling fonts duplicates functionality. Problems: You will probably notice that any resolution change (or restarting) of the first accelerated xserver will mess up the display for the second one using the framebuffer. This is fixable by re-running matroxset. Now, typing in a matroxset command isn't easy when you can't see the screen, so I fixed this by setting up a hotkey for my matroxset script in the window manager setup. Details for doing this depends entirely on what window manager you use. A setup with several graphichs cards doesn't have this problem. Helge Hafting |

It is possible with the G550, but it doesn't have multiple PCI addresses. That means you have to use the unaccelerated framebuffer xserver for the second head. It is ok if you don't need high performance. It is ok for webbrowsing and word processing, at least. 2D games may be ok, 3D games definitely not. Helge Hafting |

Multihead is an issue which interests me very much also. I have heard that some of the Matrox cards, G450, G550 are suitable. I recall Aivils having said that the multihead must have seperate PCI addresses for each head. Not all of the dual cards have seperate PCI addresses. Personally, I don't have experience with the Matrox cards, but I am very interested in hearing from someone who has used them. I am trying to set up a box with two monitors. I have compiled both 2.4.27 and 2.6.9 but reached best results with the latter. However, I have some problems. Using grub I have append=dumbcon=3 but when I try to start X with a vt higher then 16, X says that the vt doesn't exist. Don't know if it is important. The USB keyboard doesn't show up in /proc/bus/console/*/* (the serial is there and a line with VGA+. I can use the USB with Dev Phys so it isn't that dramatic). Am I missing something while compiling the kernel? When I start the second instance of X the first monitor goes black. I can switch back to the first, but then the second goes black etc. Since I haven't been able to find the patch for X nor a precompiled one, I am using unpatched X with Option "PciOsConfig" "1" in both config files. I also do echo 1 > /proc/bus/pci/hackvideo before I start X. What may be the cause (Kernel is wrong configured, the hardware, is it that I use unpatched X or something else)? Using sis (SiS 300 I think) and nv (GF400) drivers for the video cards and Debian Sarge. I have tried precompiled kernels from Andreas Schuldei: with 2.4.21 my box doesn't boot and with 2.6.0 X doesn't start. It seems that Schuldei have made precompiled Xfree86 available for debian, but not sure how to use or if it is good for sarge (can't use sid). Any help would be much appreciated and my apologies if this post is inappropriate for this list. --ph ______________________________________________ Renovamos el Correo Yahoo!: ¡250 MB GRATIS! The 2.6.x kernel use a 1000 HZ clock, while the 2.4.x kernel use a 100 HZ clock. This means the 2.6.x kernel gives a much more accurate result, 2.4.x has 10x rounding errors when reporting time. That can have dramatic consequences when timing a task that have a quickly repeating pattern of "hard work" and "waiting". A video player is definitely such a case, it works hard rendering a frame (or a few), then it waits a little so the video won't play too fast. 2.6.X have a slightly higher overehad due to the faster timer, but this overhead is small anyway. Take a look at the kernel list archives for more detailed explanations of the timing issues. 2.4.X probably seem to use less cpu due to rounding errors. The true overehead of the faster timer have been measured by running cpu hogs, and wasn't all that much. It certainly didn't steal 30% or so of the cpu. Helge Hafting |

Jean-Daniel: If you change these lines in your patch: 3295 (devcvte.c:1107) 10530 (vt_ioctl.c:697) 10547 (vt_ioctl.c:714) and make ->keyboard ->beeper instead Then you have the pcspeaker back, as per recent posting by Aivils. WFM except that you have to tell gdm not to beep and you have to insert a "beeper turner offer" into the sequence of init that reboots the system, because gdm beeps anyway and he uses gdk_beep() that apparently has problems turning the beep off. Something like this will do: #include <sys/ioctl.h> #include <linux/kd.h> #include <fcntl.h> int main( int argc, char **argv ) { int fd = open("/dev/tty1", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK); ioctl(fd, KDMKTONE, 0); } Hugo --- Jean-Daniel Pauget <jd...@di...> wrote: > > as kernel 2.4.29 provides several interesting > harware improvement, not to > say also some igmp security flawness > corrections, I put a cosmetic > bruby patch targeted to 2.4.29-pre2 on my site : > > http://disjunkt.com.local/dualhead/ > > the patch itself : > > http://disjunkt.com.local/dualhead/bruby-2.4.29-pre2-20041217.bz2 > > -- > Jean-Daniel Pauget > > Tél: +33 (0) 676 952 746 > 2, rue André PELCA > 50580 Denneville-Plage > France > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide > Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT > Products from real users. > Discover which products truly live up to the hype. > Start reading now. > http://productguide.itmanagersjournal.com/ > _______________________________________________ > Linuxconsole-dev mailing list > Lin...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linuxconsole-dev > __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi all, I patched the original 2.6.9 with the bruby patch "patch-2.6.7-ruby.bz2" when i am doing make "modules" everything in fine.
