hi all, I compiled the kernel 2.6.7 with bruby patch. Everything is fine, I can get multiple X .I successfully started 4 terminals on an Intel board,. with some probels on X. My problem is that when i give the command modprobe, an message come like "QM_MODULES function not defined". Why this is happening? wat's wrong with me? regards vinu |

Zoltan's patches applayed > http://www.ltn.lv/~aivils/files/ruby-2.6.10-nofb-20050110.diff.bz2 > > Aivils Now have a working FC3. Thanks for your work on ruby! http://kerneltrap.org/node/4493 I saw this and couldn't help but wonder how it might perform, particularly with the "unusual" load of multiple local consoles. Towards that end I have applied the zaphod scheduler and gene algorythm to my 2.6.9 ruby kernel. I have noticed a real change in CPU usage behaviour. I've observed an adaptec hardware RAID array increase throughput and other little improvements in behaviour. Reduced idle load... http://www.members.westnet.com.au/vanzeeland/Linux/kernel/patch-2.6.9-ruby.vz9x1.diff.gz Here 'tis. Includes a lot of driver updates and other functionals too. patch against kernel.org 2.6.9 I am wondering if this scheduler configuration might improve response for multi console gaming and multi-console loads in general? The task and anticipatory I/O scheduler tuneable variables will converge towards the optimum settings for whatever load happens to be running. When the load changes the schedulers converge towards a new optimum. I am very curious to hear others thoughts. I've had a couple of days uptime with it now; doesn't seem to have effected stability at all, and seeing modest performance improvements. Notably quake3 was very playable while recompiling a kernel; even on this dual Athlon playability would previously suffer much more doing this. Trying two heads of Unreal Tournament 2004 demo, one head in spectator more chasing the other head around; bear in mind this is a dual 2800+ athlon with 2GbDDR, it took much longer to load the second instance, I got good agp performance at 1024x768 and PCI at 640x480. The PCI performance seemed OK, but nothing to write home about, bit choppy. Quake3 showed improvements with two consoles at 1024x768. Good performance on both. Previously both had worked ok but there was noticable moments of lag but playable. Now both are smooth with no laggy moments and I think I have a higher framerate, at least on the AGP console. James P.S Trying to take it further, I would like to try this gene algorythm kernel on some single CPU FC3 workstations; I tried to patch the ruby inlining fixes to 2.6.9, however the following hunk failed, and I know not how to fix it: *************** *** 1372,1378 **** console_conditional_schedule(); release_console_sem(); - out: return n; #undef FLUSH } --- 1372,1377 ---- console_conditional_schedule(); release_console_sem(); return n; #undef FLUSH } is there a simple fix? |

Dear friends: I traced out that the previous problems were because of the dependency problems and particularly related with the desktop distribution of the debian-based SimplyMEPIS-2004.06. I have installed the patched ruby-kernel-2.6.7 from the c3sl site and it gets booted fine. But the problem is when I execute "cat /proc/bus/input/devices", it shows of 5 entries like below in vanilla 2.6.7 kernel, but with the patched ruby-kernel, the PS/2 mouse entry (the first one in the below) does not show up. And obviously, the PS/2 mouse stops functioning under the ruby-kernel. Any idea? Hi All! This is off topic a litle. Under 2.4.29-rc1, 2.4.27 current Nvidia 6629 works for me. But i must disable GLX extension . GLX will work only after patching installation: Remove under 2.4.XX undesired symbolic link # rm /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 Create working one # ln -s /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6629 /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 6629 provide two files libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6629. 2.6.10-ruby is still subject to the inlining compile failure under fc3 / gcc3.4.2 Perhaps some of the kernel hackers and experienced coders here might be able to explain what needs to be changed so this can compile under fc3 and others using gcc3.4.2 or therabouts? I noted previously that the 269 ruby patch applies and compiles against the FC3 kernel source tree. It does not compile under FC3 against the stock 269 kernel tree. Although the ruby patched FC3 kernel compiles, it has not behaved stable for me. Is there a compiler flag that can be changed to prevent this compile problem? Or should we consider ruby incompatible with FC3 and/or this gcc version in the meantime? At the risk of repeating what you perhaps already know, Debian kernels ship with what is called a cramfs file with modules that avoids them filling up the kernel and support the world and then some. This is invoked via what is called "initrd". Use of this necesitates a package: http://packages.debian.org/testing/utils/initrd-tools and what the messages told you is that you do not have that package installed. Install it and at least you won't get that error anymore... HTH H __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! You are attempting to install an initrd kernel image (version 2.6.7-ruby) This will not work unless you have configured your boot loader to use initrd. (An initrd image is a kernel image that expects to use an INITial Ram Disk to mount a minimal root file system into RAM and use that for booting). As a reminder, in order to configure LILO, you need to add an 'initrd=/initrd.img' to the image=/vmlinuz stanza of your /etc/lilo.conf I repeat, You need to configure your boot loader -- please read your bootloader documentation for details on how to add initrd images. If you have already done so, and you wish to get rid of this message, please put "do_initrd = Yes" in /etc/kernel-img.conf. Note that this is optional, but if you do not, you will continue to see this message whenever you install a kernel image using initrd. Do you want to stop now? [Y/n]n (I tried to continue with the n option and got the following) Setting up kernel-image-2.6.7-ruby (10.00.Custom) ... Failed to create initrd image. dpkg: error processing kernel-image-2.6.7-ruby (--install): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: kernel-image-2.6.7-ruby <UNQUOTE> However, I added the necessary lines with dumbcon=1 (as I had had 2 consoles) in /boot/grub/menu.lst as below: title MEPIS at hda7, kernel 2.6.7-ruby kernel (hd0,6)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-ruby root=/dev/hda7 nomce psmouse.proto=imps quiet splash=verbose vga=791 dumbcon=1 initrd (hd0,6)/boot/initrd.mepis And when trying to boot in the ruby image, it gave me kernel panic error saying the kernel could not find the place to mount.... Any idea? > If /lib/modules now has /2.6.7 then after installing what you cite with dpkg -i would probably install 2.6.7-ruby. But you can tell beforehand by examining the .deb see man deb. In any case I had better results with 2.6.9 Ruby, but that was with a regular 32 bit kernel of course. In Debian compiling a kernel is trivial with the kernel-package package. Perhaps you know. "make-kpkg --revision 1 kernel_image" gets you the deb in the /usr/src dir. Get the .config file from /boot and adjust with make menuconfig in a vc. With 2.6.9 I was able to use the Debian source of the kernel and use Ruby (i.e the 2.6.9 vanilla kernel and the Debian patches added) but it will depend on the kernel and if it does not fit you will have to use the vanilla kernel. Sorry if this has been said already and I am duplicating information. Aivils seems to think that the main problem is the video cards. If I were to do it over again I would first experiment with many of those. As it is I only have 2 nVidia cards, so funny looking garbage remains a questionmark... The xserver from "testing" have isolatedevice compiled in so you don't need to patch at all. You can use stuff like Option "IsolateDevice" "PCI:1:0:0" in XF86Config-4 - it just works. The screen section may need a Option "InitPrimary" "on" for xservers running on secondary graphichs cards (i.e. those cards not initialized by the bios.) >3) Whether it is necessary to make changes in the display manager?
