Hi James! Are You aware linuxconsole.sf.net front page is partialy obsolete? You was total careless , bot now You show some activity. It would be nice if You rewrite "New Features" - multiple current tty. - each current tty can be assigned with console output device and input device (keyboard). - special console output device "frame buffer console" may be assigned with number of current tty's, where number is count of registered framebuffer devices. - each console device may be assigned with nuber of keyboards. - one keyboard conjugate with one console device. One keyboard link to multiple consoles is _not_ permited. - keyboard - console device link is runtime configurable. - each console device assigned with bootime configurable count ouf tty's. - under X suitable is number of dummy consoles, each X can use independ keyboard, which is assigned with headless dummy console. In my opinition ruby CVS looks like waste box. That CVS does not have any internet link, excluded only Vojtech's tools like evtest.c jstest.c and so on. I vote moving ruby-2.6 to separate CVS module like ruby. sf.net have enough docs how to move whole tree. ruby/linux - erase. ruby/xfree86 - add to fornt page - tuntico is linux input subsystem event translator to xfree events , current against XFree 3.3.6 . Suitable for all input devices as well. Support 6 axis and 12 buttons (or more). Code still remain unique. Verdict- maintain. ruby/utils - maintain ruby/web - seems useless, because it never goes to front. ruby/docs - ? ruby/app-pathces - ? You are native english speaker against my so-so english, so web space recreating is easy task for You! Best regards, Aivils |

The problem is that the open source model doesn't work very well. The idea of hundreds of programs working a small amount to complete a task quickly doesn't happen. What happens is two or three developers end up sending huge amounts of spare time to get it working over a very very long period of time. There is so much more that can make ruby and multidesktop linux go much further. I consider ruby very immature. The current version is no where as developed as our 2.4 tree was. Unfortunetly I don't do ruby for a living so I can't back port the improvements to the 2.6 tree in the near future. I have talks with the X guys about the next generation of X servers and ruby. Its sad but to get where we want will take over 5 years. You can see that with DRI since it ends up support hardware a year more after it comes out. They to are volunters who earn nothing in return. We could get there faster if we had $$$ resources so the key developers could work on the next generation of software. I just don't have the capital to do this and VCs in the US don't like to invest anymore unless you can make profits in one month. So if companies want to use our product that is fine. All we like is to be hired in return :-) |

> Wow!!! I guess you beat me to the punch. I was planning to try to start > a company to support this project... This just sends another stake through my heart. We are finding out the same thing that you noticed, no one seems to care commercially about multi-user capability from a single box. Unless you have a free supply of reliable boxen to run LTSP, this is the best solution for lots of applications but no one seems to see the advantages yet. While it might be our most unique feature, our company is about getting pre-configured hardware and software combinations to users, and the multi-user features has actually generated less interest than TV tuners! I would love to hire some people to work on the multi-user stuff, but right now it is mainly marketing and sales that is required. The multi-user features only take up about %20 of our development time. You probably know about Userful, and their non-open source approach -- I think they are having a hard time trying to sell stand alone proprietary multi-user software. (They're probably reading this list and looking at our scripts as I write this ;) If you had the funding to hire people, I think there is room for a multi-user open source software company to compete with Userful, and Open Sense Solutions would actually purchase software and support from such a company. Userful has approached us to become their reseller, but we cannot make such an important part of our product non-open source. Maybe in a few months we could start contributing financially to this project and hiring people or at least offering cash bounties for specific functionality. If people have ideas or would like to help with marketing/sales/advertising for the multi-user features we have a small budget for that, and hopefully more sales will lead to a bigger development budget. This is long overdue, but I'd like to formally offer something back to this project. My company sells pre-configured Linux machines including multi-user systems, and everything we do is open source. While we don't have the bandwidth to offer our full install disc for download, for starters I've made a small page containing the most relevant scripts for the linux console project: http://groovix.com/linuxconsole.html Among other things, Groovix scripts detect how many users to run, handle multi-user sound, and let you plug in mice, keyboards, sound cards, and video cards wherever you want, while maintaining consistent assignment between reboots. They are pretty simple scripts, but work well. You might also get a lot of useful info just by browsing our site, including exact specifications on what hardware we use. We tried to give you guys credit, currently at http://groovix.com/faq.html , third question down. If you have any questions or suggestions you can send email directly to lin...@gr... as we don't always keep up with this mailing list. I.e. the kernel patch, the Xorg PCI isolate patch and the GDM setup and the device permissions (udev configuration on FC3) and /etc/security/console.perms tweak so the first user who logs in does not grab all "console" devices. (sound, etc.) Maybe it's just I was lucky with my decision to buy two Radeons. I am running a fairly stock FC3, only the kernel and xorg-x11 RPMS are patched. I am running kernel-2.6.10-1.741ruby (i.e. two erratas behind) because later -acX patches broke the ruby patch, and I didn't have time to refresh it. I see you runs ruby on a 64-bit amd cpu. I do so too, but only in 32-bit mode. Have you succeeded in running ruby in 64-bit mode? I have compiled and booted such a kernel, but I cannot get both xservers up. The bios will only initialize one card, the other is initialized by X, using int10. With a 64-bit kernel (and a 64-bit xserver), the xserver quits with no message instead of running the int10 initialization. Is something extra needed to make this work with amd64? Or is it currently impossible? Is there any way at all to have an extra video card initialized? I have not been able to find any information at all about this issue. Helge Hafting |

Hi, I'm new is this mailing list. and my doing my own Multihead system. With -2 Voodoo3 pci. OR -1 Voodoo3 pci and a TNT2 M64 (agp) But none of them gone well. With 2 voodoo's simply when loading the X for the second board nothing happens, but the Xfree thinks it is working and Ok. Even the Xfree86.log shows nothing apropriated. and i'm using TDFX driver for both of them. For a Voodoo3 (pci) with TNT2 M64 (agp) Voodoo with the TDFX driver and TNT2 with NVIDIA driver. I start the Voodoo3 first e then the TNT2[agp] is the secundary. When loading the X for the TNT2 the system becomes SLOW and suddenly the 2ºscreen become to blink with WHITE and BLACK. but X thinks it is Okay too! In XF86Config-4 i had put to TNT2 to use the int10 module Option "UseInt10Module" "true" If anyone got a multihead with some of theses combinations and can give me some help i really apreciate. -- Bruno Ribas - ri...@uf... |

Hi! With 2.6.10-ruby.vz2 an using SVGATextMode instead of fb evtest.c shows that /dev/input/event4 reads everything perfectly from my A4Tech 2 wheel mouse. XFree86 4.3.0 with the Debian IsolateDevice patch reads everything also except for buttons 1 + 3: "press" and "release" are not separated but show up after a "release". I've substituted 2 for 1 which does do it right, but that means I use a two-fingered button press now. So I tried XFree86 4.5.0 to see if its evdev behavior is better: guess what: *it does not exist*! So I tried Xorg: *it does not have it either*! Hi! Got a problem with XFree86 and evdev protocol: the mouse left button does not separate "press" from "release", but does them both together, so you cannot drag anything. I "solved it" by making 2->1 which does separate them but that means pressing both buttons for button 1. evtest.c shows that the kernel passes all the data correctly, so it's X. To see if Xorg would change things I compiled R682 and patched it for Ruby (attached). Some remarks: Positive: Yes, you the windows can have shadows. They look good. Yes, windows can be transparent. That looks good too. Negative: It knows nothing of the evdev protocol. You cannot Alt+Ctrl+F<x> to a vt once in Xorg. It is *excruciatingly slow*, so as to be no good for my 850MHz Athlon. Maybe when I get the 2.3GHz Thoroughbred. Occasionally, quite often the server dies. Bottomline: stick with XFree86. Regards, Hugo PS For some reason sourceforge does not send me the mailing list anymore, but I think I still can send things... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, As mentioned earlier, I am trying to get my system up to a more recent ruby version, so I've tried some of the recently posted patches with varying results. 1) vanilla 2.6.11 with Aivils 2.6.11-rc4-ruby patch: - currently working with dual X sessions, very workable for me :-), but no framebuffer consoles :-( 2) 2.6.11-mm1 with Zoltans 2.6.11-mm1 patch: - working dual framebuffers; but crash as soon as I start X or when I switch virtual console. Not workable :-( (crashes posted earlier) 3) Recently posted (by Aivils) 2.6.11-mm2 with Zoltans 2.6.11-mm2-ruby patch (http://www.ltn.lv/~aivils/files/ruby-2.6.11-mm2-2.diff.bz2): - working dual framebuffers; works great as long as I remain in console mode :-), but no X :-( (kernel oops attached at the end of this mail, although at first look it does not seem ruby, but usb related... any ideas?) All this is with a Gentoo xorg-6.8.2 system using a set of matrox cards (G550AGP & G450PCI), using xorg mga driver with matrox HALlib. So, I'm now using solution 1, since X is what I use the most, but ideally I would like to see the good results of 1) and 3) combined :-). Thanks for the good work guys! Mark. Hi! (I think sourceforge lost my subscription..) I have 2 A4Tech mice for (B)Ruby - USB connected. Use the same XFree86 servers + same config, but: in 2.6.x only the top wheel works in 2.4.x both work. Ergonomically that matters because my right indexfinger rests right on the bottom wheel. It has to be kernel related therefore. Can anybody give me a hint as to where to start looking to fix that? Googling provides no answers, or rather its answers don't work, they are all X related. Thanks! Hugo __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com |
