Hi, I hope this is the right place for my question; if not, please someone give me a hint where to ask it... I have accidentally deleted another NTFS partition than I thought I did; now I have a deleted 57GB NTFS partition which has been partly overwritten with a 5GB ext3fs partition (1.7GB used) and 2GB swap. There has not happened very much on these since, so it should be possible to get back most of my data. So, what should I do? For security reasons, I reckon it would be wise to create images of the new partitions (and now unused space). I'd like to avoid to create an imoage of the entire 120 GB disk, since the affected part covers 57 GB and I have another 80GB disk in spare which I could use for the image. What would happen if I just deleted the new partitions and re-established the deleted NTFS partition without (long-) formatting it?. Is there a tool which would help me to get data back from this? Therefore you can't do it with the native driver. You may use the non-native driver with a project called Captive-NTFS. Anyway, note that your kernel holds the old NTFS driver. If you don't plan on using captive, you may gain better performance and stability (in R/O mode) by patching your kernel with the new NTFS driver. Knoppix has a VERY OLD resizer (basically two years old), with severe limitations. Knoppix doesn't corrupt data but its functionality is very limited compared to the newer versions, see http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html#fragmented. So the steps, 1. Take the backup of your absolute necessary files (just in case 1%). 2. Create a SystemRescueCD bootable LiveCD. [ ... steps here aren't needed at all ... ] 7. Boot into SystemRescueCD using the liveCD. 8. Type run_qtparted from the command line. 9. Select the HD (/dev/hda). 10. Select /dev/hda1 (or partition 1). 11. Select Tools->Resize (or Option ->resize) 12. It will ask you the Value to resize... give whatever value you are comfortable with... 13. it will resize.. He told me a method of doing it using a Knoppix LiveCD. He said that he has tried it with SP1 and it has worked fine, but has not tried it with SP2 yet. So before I try it out I was wondering if anyone has tried the following method using Knoppix LiveCD on SP2 and has had it work properly. I have only one partition on my 60 GB harddrive (deafult...never made a partition before on it). 1. Take the backup of your absolute necessary files (just in case 1%). 2. Create a KNOPPIX bootable LiveCD. 3. Boot the computer in Windows XP. 4. Log in as Administrator 5. Defragment the C drive. and Note down the disk space used by your data. 6. Shutdown the computer. (Note: Shutdown... Not restart) 7. Boot into KNOPPIX using the KNOPPIX liveCD. 8. Go to K->Application->qtParted ... I don't remember the actual path.. but If you search throught the menu, you will get it. 9. Select the HD (/dev/hda). 10. Select /dev/hda1 (or partition 1). 11. Select Tools->Resize (or Option ->resize) 12. It will ask you the Value to resize... give whatever value you are comfortable with... 13. it will resize.. Shutdown and reboot in Wndows just to make sure that your parition is correct. So, it would be a nice solution to recover single files if I can mount the zipped ntfsclone image file. But now, I am facing an other problem. The USB harddisk is formated as FAT32 and it looks like the file size is limited to 2GB. I have to split the image file to get it to my USB harddisk. And this makes it even worse to mount the zipped image file. But anyway I will take a look at the gentoo stuff. Thanks for your info.
