Fixing the BOOT.INI would be the problem of the user cloning the fs and with NTFS write support this wouldn't be hard. Especially since unless you are adding items to BOOT.INI you are only changing the device/partition numbers stored in it and not actuall changing the file size. I suggested it as a seperate app then ntfsclone can stay true to its goal of creating exact copies of ntfs systems. However further down the development line the code inside ntfsboot could be moved into a library and called by ntfsboot or by ntfsclone or for that matter mkntfs. In the case of ntfsclone its original functionality could be maintained but a --fix-boot option added to the command line would do exactly that... Fixboot would then become more of a wrapper to a function that actually does the work. There are a few sites on the web that dissasembled the boot sector and explain what it does. mkntfs does a good (but not perfect) job at the moment so I don't know how usefull would it be, but you're welcome. If you want your code to be integrated to mkntfs make sure all the code is you're own and post it to the linux-ntfs-dev mailing list. I can mount everything fine, but I'm not able to see any folders (in Konqueror, ls -a, etc.) which have double-byte or unicode characters in them. I'd assume that it'd be the same for files too but I can't tell because all of those files are inside folders with names that have double-byte characters. For example, in Windows, my Documents and Settings root is C:\Documents and Settings\私. I can't get at any of these files - even when running KDE in Japanese locale. It has been in production use by many distros and never has a problem been reported that has turned out to be a problem with the NTFS driver. You do not need to enable anything special as long as your kernel is a 2.6 kernel and it contains the NTFS driver compiled with write support enabled. If you are using a 2.4 kernel you need to upgrade to 2.6. If you are compiling your own kernel make sure to enable NTFS and NTFS write support when configuring the kernel. You then just mount the ntfs partition and setup the loopback device losetup /dev/loop0 /mnt/ntfs/bestcrypt-container-file and you can now use /dev/loop0 to access your bestcrypt container as the block device /dev/loop0. Several linux distributions (e.g. Topologi Linux) use this method to install themselves on an ntfs partition in a large file which is then loopback mounted under Linux and a normal linux partition (like ext3) is placed on it. Attribute name (if present) 3. Sequence number 3rd key of the sorting should be "Starting VCN" Third question. I think, the attributes in MFT record is sorted by same order as in $ATTRIBUTE_LIST.
