One thing that has changed is that PCI support is disabled, so providing a bus ID in the device section doesn't work anymore. If that's not the problem, we need more information like the config file and server log. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer (MrCooper)/ Debian GNU/Linux (powerpc) developer XFree86 and DRI project member / CS student, Free Software enthusiast |

Is that normal ? No idea. Normally, it should use the resolution you provide on the bootstrap line as a kernel parameter. Does it use this one or does it use something else? Maybe your monitor has some troubles synchronising. > After reading some docs I found how to get an ext3 partition by using mke2fs > -j /dev/... but can I do that on my boot partition without loosing > everything ? Hmm, IIRC this should be possible. Please read the article on http://www.debianplanet.org/node.php?id=627 . It will provide you with some useful information about the switch (no, it is NOT about Ellen.. ;) ). > I succeed with the floppy : -o size=1760 was too much > I restart the installation but after the base system, I choose only X with > tasksel. Forget tasksel, it's like catching a mouse with an elephant. Download x-window-system by apt-get install x-window-system or using aptitude. Afterwards, download some gnome stuff (if you like). Aptitude will be of great help here! > I chose this time glint as gfx driver and it looks like the system > recognizes the pm2 with a busID of PCI:00:01:00 > But startx does not work. > Here is the error log and the XF86Config-4 > Hope someone could solve this > Lio [ snip first part of XFree error log ] > (II) GLINT: driver for 3Dlabs chipsets: gamma, ti_pm2, ti_pm, pm3, pm2v, > pm2, pm, 300sx, 500tx, mx, delta > (WW) GLINT: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:1:0) found > (EE) No devices detected. Hi all, Each time I start Linux, my monitor is switching 4 times (it looks like i= f it tries to find a screen mode) before I see the prompt. Is that normal ?= After reading some docs I found how to get an ext3 partition by using mke= 2fs -j /dev/... but can I do that on my boot partition without loosing everything ? I succeed with the floppy : -o size=3D1760 was too much = I restart the installation but after the base system, I choose only X wit= h tasksel. = I chose this time glint as gfx driver and it looks like the system recognizes the pm2 with a busID of PCI:00:01:00 But startx does not work. Hi all, I installed the base system from Debian3.0 CD and already tried a few time to install the rest but here I am getting stuck because whatever I do, in the end X does not work. I am using vmapus-2.4.13-20011030.lha as kernel. I have an A1200PPC + BvisionPPC. 1) Which gfx driver do I select (fbdev, glint) ? 2) How to obtain PCI ID bus decimal ? 3) What is the name of the mouse port ? I use the normal amigamouse port, but during the config process I do not which port to select (psaux, tty0) 4) I choose gdm as default window manager but until now the only thing I got after booting is bash (I guess here is something to do with X). 5) I copied the XF86Config-4 found on apus site to /etc but still X does not work 6) Which keyboard do I choose ? I have an A4000 keyboard with fr layout. I selected macintosh and fr. 7) I wanted to transfer XFfree86.0.log to my df0: to include it here but I can not mount the drive with the command "mount -t affs /dev/fd0 /floppy -o size=1760". Whats wrong ? Thats all for now, thanks in advance Lio |

You should download kernel using cvs and try to compile it by yourself. Instructions how to do this are on linux-apus.sf.net, you should find there something about CVS (go to kernel part). BTW. You should have read XFree.log carefully, there's everything you want to know - look at the lines beginnig with (EE) - they indicate errors. Kernels above 2.4.13 don't boot because of a nasty bug in interrupts handling in apus, it wasn't removed but I introduced a little hack that helped A1200 users. I think there is some problem in the APUS kernel, servicing interrupts maybe, that has never been solved. It does not evidenty show up except with certain hardware combinations; like mine I'm afraid. :) I haven't tryed APUS in awhile but I always had trouble with freezes and lockups expecially after pushing any kind of sustained disk activity. When I installed NETBSD I never noticed such problems. Of course at the time there was no PPC port done. (OT) That reminds me. I need to check to see if the NETBSD folks ever got the PowerUP port done. Fred |

Hi ! I'm using 2.4.18 kernel and I experience a few problems with it. It's quite stable but try to install xserver 4.x.x and you will start running through the minefields :) I've lost one ext2 partition and two reiserfs because of xserver 4.1.0 running on 2.4.18. I found out that this version causes data corruption while writing to harddisk. Xserver 4.2.1 is a bit better it doesn't cause data coruuption while writing to "/" partition, but sometimes it trashes swap partition (what randomly crashes programs) and after a xserver's restart every(!) program ends with "segmentation fault" error. Can it be A1200 specific problem, what with A4000 users ? Has anyone experienced that problem ? Hi, I have recently altered my hard drive by creating an extra partition. This has meant that my bootstrap line is now incorrect as my Linux partition is now on the tenth partition and not the ninth. What should I change the 9 in the line below to. is it "10" or "a" as in hexadecimal. bootstrap --apus -k vmapus-2.4.4 -v root=/dev/hda9 video=amifb:off video=pm2fb:mode:1024x768-75 ide=doubler -d debug=mem Any help would be great. Hi everyone, I've just tried the latest kernel version and it *does* boot fine [I couldn't boot anything > than 2.4.13], and this is the good news. :) Sadly I'm not able to start the X server anymore, as it outputs a whole lot of "unresolved symbol" messages right after loading the video drivers. I tried changing glint into fbdev, but the problem remains. Has it something to do with the modules compiled into it? Thank you Michele |

Hi! When I use KPPP to utilize my modem, the whole system freezes. This happens to the 2.4.18-2 kernel. So it seems that the serial port works better with the 2.2.10 kernel, how come? Is this going to be fixed soon? It's a pity that I can't use Debian to go online. I haven't tested how well the serial port works with the latest 2.4 kernel, yet.. I also tried to compile my own kernel, but for me this was a pain, but I will test this again in the future. When will there be working joy support for the 2.4 kernel? -- Bj=F6rn Johansson "Debian rocks!!" |

Hi all, I finally got my debianppc3.0 cd and installed it. Now I get a strange thing : I can not boot anymore. The WB is telling me that bootstrap is not an executable ! Same for my previously working linuxppc1999 partition. So I copied the latest boothack010623 and start again but it still does not work. Very funny as it was working a few minutes before because I used it to start the installation. To prevent the question, I have a launch script like that "bootstrap --apus -k linux.bin root=/dev/sda7 video=pm2fb: nobats 60nsram debug=mem" with IconX as default tool icon. Double click on bootstrap says the same thing (not an executable) What is wrong ? Please help. Regards Lio |

I create the patch against the Debian kernel source provided in the kernel-source-2.4.20 package. While Debian has a policy of staying as close to the official kernel source as possible, there may be some patches applied to it. Hi ! I've a problem with patching 2.4.20 kernel sources with diff-file downloaded from apus site. Kernel sources were downloaded from www.kernel.org. 'Patch' program says that cannot find file Documentation/bigphysarea.txt and there's a lot of rejects and it suggest I try to do reverse patching. What's wrong ?
