Yes, this is the thing I'll write driver for when at last kernel 2.4.18 works. FastATA as I wrote on linux-apus-devel list works like a patch for gayle (At last this one in A1200). If you want to know more about FastATA look at www.elbox.com. I want to know whether it has influence on our problem or not, because FastATA hmm... emulates (?) first ide port of gayle in PIO-0 mode. > > You should also assure people that e-mail won't be used in any other > > purpose than contacting with those people in order to get more > > specific description of problem. > > Clear. OK. Personally I think that our poll have everything it should have. Regards Krystian |

Hello! Since Michel has added me to the APUS group (thanks!), I was so free to=20 add a directory for a preview of the IDE poll (because I have no write=20 permission to the directory Alan has created). You can find it under: http://linux-apus.sourceforge.net/IDE_poll_test/IDE_poll.html So take a look and give suggestions or even make it public. Ciao, Ren=E8 |

Here the first review for the poll. Just drop the html-file to a browser.= =20 The elements of the form will then be send to a php-script (which not=20 exists for now) and simply writes all statements to a file. Please make=20 your changes and/or give suggestions. BTW, in my opinion we should do different polls for the IDE/last_ipl and=20 glint problems. Ciao |

Maybe more general > poll should be done ? What information do we really need ??? Exactly what I am asking for! It's diffccult to estimate the significance of the answeres gahtered by a poll, and secondly, it's maybe even more difficult to ask the right questions. If a poll is done, I think it should be an exception to the rule (say, we shouldn't have a new poll every other day, because we realized that the polled information is incomplete), therefore it should be a very meaningful questionary. To increase significance, the poll could e.g. be made public by the usual amiga news services, and so on. Well, I am not a developer, but with my little amount of time, I could at least help produce some useful debugging output concerning the glint problem. But, I agree with you, as you have been writing in an other post, that maybe first the ide problem should be tackled, and just on second position, the glint problem. Bu this doesn't inhibt us on asking about both problems on the same questionary. It may be useful if some of the senior developers here could give some advice, what information really should be asked for, e.g. revision of this and this file, or hardware stuff. It's not very productive to ask people questions about their setup, without really knowing which questions really provide the important information! Just my .2 p's.. And please keep in mind, this post isn't ment offensive at all!! It only represents my thoughts trying to help to find out of this quite dodgy situation. -- Good night, Andi |

But what should I ask for... I don't have this problem. If I had it I'd know what to ask about. I wonder if only a part of A4000 users are affected by this problem, or all of them, ie. it's a question of differences between hardware or a kernel and/or xserver related problem. BTW. I think everything should be done in proper order. I mean, the working ide-driver is the most important thing, after fixing it we should focus on glint driver problem. Why ? Maybe it's very irritaiting having those crashes, but not having kernel that works prevent me (not only me) from developing apus. It's a pity (as Andreas Wust said) that people who experience those problem aren't those who would solve them quickly. Regards Krystian Baclawski |

First, I don't know how much folks is lurking around at apus at sourcefor= ge, or are just waiting (like me) for the nice automatically generated mail b= y sourceforge which says "Project "Linux/APUS Kernel" ('linux-apus') has re= leased the new version of package '2.4 Kernel'. You can download it.." Second, the poll options have to be chosen very carefully. Because, does = it have any use if we know, well 40 users have problems with booting and are frozen after the ipl's, and 45 users have problems using the glint driver= (to also tackle this problems [yes, I am also hit by this bug]) . It may be more useful if we would know about their hardware config, and what exactly they are doing. So it should be something like: "Please do this p= oll, but, IF you are experience problems DO ALSO report them including your ex= act systems configuration to linuxapus-dev.." Or maybe a poll with some options like: - "ide freezes on A1200" - "ide freezes on A4000" And at best something where you could chose multiple options, so you coul= d supplement the information given above with, e.g.: - "freezes on bootup" - "freezes by chance" - "just spits out messages accidentally but doesn't freeze" Or also a feedback form resembling to the bug report form, but with the machine options and some other thing hardcoded into listviews or somethin= g similar, which automatically sends the reports to linuapus-dev. And, at last, we also need people capable of solving the problems. The current situation seems to be that people who experience the very hard problems have no idea about fixing them, and the people who could fi= x them don't experience them and can't do anything with only the informatio= n from mails. To shortly summarize: glint troubles only seem to happen on A4000 machine= s, the ide probs mostly on A1200 (altough this may be because there are a lo= t more A1200's out there). --=20 Best wishes, Andi |

Hi, Alan! I'm not sure if I understand you right (I am only a german...). But I use= =20 a 604e@200MHz with CV-PPC and booting from IDE. All seems working fine,=20 but the last_ipl[] outputs. As far as I know, there are some differences=20 between 603e and 604e (the MMU?). By the way, I have other problems (many segmentation faults) that may be=20 kernel related or related to this issue. As Krystian Baclawski say, we should do a poll. I last mentioned that we=20 should also make a poll for X4-server crashes on some machines using the=20 glint-driver. Michel said, it is able to do a poll on sf.net. How? Ciao, Ren=E8 |
