heya there smart developer geeks i'm trying to put together a ride board and a housing board for the Midwest Social Forum, and i really love the look of LighteningBug, but problem is that i don't have access to a MySQL server. Do you know of a php-only based alternative? or any other solutions? thanks for yer great work. kevin -- MIDWEST SOCIAL FORUM 2006 Milwaukee, WI :: July 6-9, 2006 www.mwsocialforum.org 608.262.1420 |

Hello All-- LightningBug is now available via subversion. The old cvs repository has been disabled. If need be it can be restored temporarily (but we'd rather not!) Anonymous public access to the head of the subversion repository is achieved by: svn checkout http://lightningbug.fifthhorseman.net/svn/lb/trunk/lightningbug [^] If you want to get a particular tag (e.g. fubar), do: svn checkout http://lightningbug.fifthhorseman.net/svn/lb/tags/fubar [^] For developer (read/write) access, you should use the svn+ssh transport instead, like this: svn checkout svn+ssh://dirt.counterconvention.org/home/svnroot/lb/trunk/lightningbug developer access still requires a shell account on dirt. This information is also available on mantis at: http://bugtracker.jloreview.com/view.php?id=299 Regards, --dkg and mark |

howdy folks-- as a result of the work that jamie and mark and i have been doing, the HEAD of CVS is now in a broken state. We're making some pretty invasive changes to the DB structure, so please don't grab from the HEAD of CVS and expect it to work smoothly right now. if you want a stable version, pull from LightningBug_1_x-branch at the moment, the only things which work really at all are: logging in and out as a vetter, adding people to the banlist, modifying user profiles, creating/tweaking boards, listing users, and vetter invitations. everything to do with listings is in a sort of interim state, waiting on more work as we iron out the interactions between the new LB_Submission object and the LB_Listing object, from which it sprang. At the moment, it looks like we've managed to chop LB_Listing roughly in half with this move, pushing a significant chunk of that monstrous file into class.lb.submission.php. this is a good thing, assuming we can coax functional behavior out of it. Also, there are currently no scripts in place to migrate a 1.x install to a 2.0-pre install, so do *not* try this on a site with data you expect to keep. We'll be working on the migration scripts once the main functionality has settled down a bit. peace, --dkg |

so i think the plan is afoot, then. i'll be here from 7pm onwards today, so hopefully we can get some penguinday ideas sorted out tonight. Mark and Jamie and i will probably be meeting here earlier (around 3pm -- yikes that's soon!) to do some work on the LB v2 development project for joint calendaring. all are welcome to that as well, of course! Looking forward to seeing y'all. peace, --dkg On May 2, ab...@bw... said: > I can do thursday a su casa. > > I'd like to think about workshops we might want to lead. > > > Daniel Kahn Gillmor wrote: > > just to follow up on this, since penguinday is nigh -- what are folks > > thinking? are folks up for meeting briefly some evening this week to > > discuss our penguin day strategy? just to follow up on this, since penguinday is nigh -- what are folks thinking? are folks up for meeting briefly some evening this week to discuss our penguin day strategy? I'd be happy to meet Thursday evening (5 May) at my place. Alternatively, we could do a ytalk session on dirt, or a jabber conference, if that makes things more convenient for folks. peace, --dkg On April 25, ab...@bw... said: > We should compare notes a bit about who we'd like to reach out to in > terms of pitching LB to folks who we think could or should use it or > contribute to it and getting them to Penguin Day as well. > > --a > Jamie McClelland wrote: > > Hey all - don't forget to register! That sounds good. although - I wonder if having this functionality in lightningbug is really worth it. If our cron job has to move and remove a file anyway - we could just have it move index.php to index.php.down and move no-access.html to index.html (and in reverse when it finishes). It would make the cron job a tiny bit more complex but would not involve any change to lb. jamie p.s. I saw a demo once that had a nice little javascript countdown to the next db wipe (there's was timed for Midnight UCT). That would help with the other little problem of someone having their feet swept out from under them while in the middle of vetting or posting something. awesome, jamie. this looks great. nice and clean. i'm happy to help with the cron-job wipe/restore, if you want to talk about it. Seems like we should put up a "site down for maintenance" message, flush the db, reload from a base db, and then remove the "site down for maintenance" message. hrm. we could auto-modify the config file, i suppose, but that seems messy. here's a proposal: we declare a specific filename (e.g. <lb-install-path>/no-access.html) and if that file exists, it gets displayed instead of anything else -- no db hits, no nothing. then the cron-job just has to move a file into place, do the db tear-down and rebuild, and then move the file back out of the way. what do you think? peace, --dkg PS i touched up the vetter-demo invite page to spell "vet" correctly :) On April 13, jm...@ma... said: > Hi all - > > I made a bunch of superficial changes to the code base - mostly to > improve the look of the default installation. Hi all - I made a bunch of superficial changes to the code base - mostly to improve the look of the default installation. It still has a way to go (it no longer looks accidental, but now I'm afraid it's lost every shred of character it might have had before). In the process I stripped all the table tags and replaced with css. And I added a generic content policy and vetter guidelines (stripped of cc.org stuff) and added them to the cvs. Finally - I tweaked the web site a bit and got the demo up and working on dirt. Please check it out. It includes a little hack for inviting yourself to become a vetter. (link from main site: http://lightningbug.sf.net). I'm thinking of adding a cron job to clear all data every night at 3:00 am EST. There is no way to delete yourself as a vetter (you can simply put yourself on permanent vacation). Some people might not like the idea of their email address being stored in perpituity on a demo server. jamie |

i've just configured lightningbug.fifthhorseman.net to point to dirt's IP address. that should propagate to the authoritative nameservers within 15 minutes, iirc, and from there, however long your caching resolver takes to flush the old NXDOMAIN responses. as much as i like lightningb.ug, i think we probably have better things to spend $60 + 17% VAT on for 2 years of registration. That's a lot of roti. peace, --dkg On April 6, lib...@gm... said: > lightningb.ug sounds lovely, i 3rd or 4th the opinion to stay away > from counterconvention > > http://lightningbug.fifthhorsemen.net might work too or other things > > > On Apr 6, 2005 1:39 PM, Dan Check <da...@jl...> wrote: > > I think this or a different wholly owned domain makes sense. I think this or a different wholly owned domain makes sense. I agree with Jamie that we shouldn't use counterconvention.org. Also, this will allow us to show solidarity with the government of President Museveni. Great. As soon as I have a free sec, I'll work on putting it on dirt. Which leads me to... any preferences on domain names? Hi all - Looks like email is out - so hosting the demo on sf is pretty much out. They say it is temporary, but they said that about their cron jobs too (that was last summer). Last I check a couple months ago, no cron service. I just got approval to host it on May First - if people want, we can do that. Although - Daniel - is hosting on dirt an option? (and we already have ssh accounts there and the cvs repository is there). What do people think?? Jamie -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [ alexandria-Support Requests-1175574 ] Project hosting question Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2005 14:49:48 -0700 From: SourceForge.net <no...@so...> To: no...@so... Support Requests item #1175574, was opened at 2005-04-02 18:57 Message generated for change (Settings changed) made by zigler You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=200001&aid=1175574&group_id=1 Category: Project Web Services >Group: First Level Support >Status: Closed >Priority: 5 Submitted By: Jamie McClelland (jamiemcclelland) Assigned to: Erich Zigler (zigler) >Summary: Project hosting question Initial Comment: Is a web-based project allowed to send outgoing email? http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=6695&group_id=1#service_outbound_email Says: Projects are prohibited from providing mail services via project web (i.e. using the Webmail module of a content management system). Does that mean no outgoing mail at all? We'd like to host a demo of our project on Sourceforge, however, the software requires users to enter their email address via the web and then receive a confirmation email message before continuing. This is not working. When testing - I created a simple php script to send mail. When I execute it while logged into shell.sf.net from the command line it works fine. When I hit the exact same script using a web browser, I never receive the email. Please let me know if this is by design or whether I'm doing something wrong. Thanks! Jamie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Erich Zigler (zigler) Date: 2005-04-05 16:49 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1243797 Greetings, The issue you have cited is covered by the Site Status page (link in left navbar); text shown below: ( 2005-01-13 10:12:24 - Project Web Service ) As of 2005-01-13 we have disabled the ability for project web content to send out e-mail. Hi all- forgot to add... Daniel, Mark and I had a work day last saturday. We ate rotis. We also started a discussion about where to ultimately put the documentation. Right now we have a good short term solution: * All documentation is in the wiki on Amanda's server. * Amanda wrote a script to pull the documentation from the wiki into a single file, which is how we have a documentation snap shot on the lightningbug web site right now. Long term, we suggested two options: * Permanently keep the documentation in a wiki (Amanda might not want this to be her server - also as a group we might want this hosted on sourceforge - all options). Advantages: easy to contribute, easy to use. Disadvantages: hard to track versioning/link to version of code, can't bundle with releases. * Take the existing documentation, break it into single html files, and add it the CVS. Advantagese: one system for code and documentation, easy to track versions. Disadvantages: hard to get other people to contribute to it. What are people's thoughts? Jamie |

Hi all - fyi... I submitted a support ticket to sourceforge last weekend because I can't get lb to send me email. As soon as I figure this out, I should have the demo up and going (or maybe we'll need to host the demo somewhere else). https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=200001&aid=1175574&group_id=1 Jamie |
