What do you all think? 

DNS seems to be handled by dirt (a.ns.counterconvention.org) and the b record
seems to be handled by an IP address that was managed by May First/People Link
so long ago I don't even recognize it (but the reverse DNS still says it:
davis.mayfirst.org).

If people are fine with the page - I guess we could update the NS record on
dirt to repoint it (chavez should respond to counterconvention.org and
www.counterconvention.org). I think a good long term move would be to switch
DNS control to a.ns.mayfirst.org and b.ns.mayfirst.org so we don't abandon the
secondary name server again!

i think this is a fine idea, as long as i'm not the one who has to
write the static html page.  any objections to it?  anyone want to

that would be a fitting legacy for dirt, i think.  I was also
considering it for the proposed new mf/pl svn/trac installation, but

No prob. FYI - the MonkeyFunk offsite back continues to run - which backs up
the entire database, and everything that is world readable in /home/cvsroot,
/home/svnroot, and /opt. Not do say that you shouldn't make another backup
though!

I think we should move cc to a static single html page on one of our shared
servers and re-purpose dirt as a backup server for the us social forum (which
should eventually be a dedicated server imho).

hey LB folks--

i know dirt isn't used very much these days.  we've often talked about
shutting down the site, but somehow, no one has come up with a
time/plan for doing so.  I'm not about to do that in this e-mail.

But in the coming weeks, as debian's next release nears stability, i'd
like use dirt as a guinea pig for the upgrade process from sarge to
etch.  The worst possible consequence would probably be for the
upgrade process to damage or destroy user data on that machine.  In
this extremely unlikely event, we might even lose access to the
machine for a little while.

So: please make sure if you have any data on dirt that you want to
keep, you've got a backup somewhere.  I'll back up the svn repository
and the cc.org database myself, so you don't need to worry about those
pieces.

If you have any strong objections to my using dirt this way (or you
have data you want me to back up that you can't get to for some
reason), please let me know.  If you think this is a fine idea, please
also let me know (i'm not sure if posting to this list is yelling into
the abyss or not).

Hey Daniel,

Thanks for your ideas, and your offer to help me attempt a php backend.

But i'm sure that both my skills and time are insufficient, In the  
end, I've opted for a very simple php option modeled off the NCOR  
site that will require me to manually upload the ride and housing  
requests and offers.  a bit of a pain, but i don't expect more than  
30 or 40, and i'm updating the website all the time anyway.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you about this!  if you can't
get access to a MySQL server, one thing you might try doing is using
the SQLite libraries [0].  SQLite is a set of tools which lets you use
SQL-style queries and data manipulation without running a separate
server process.  There are php bindings for it [1], and adodb [2] (the
database abstraction layer used by LightningBug) appears to support
it as well.

But (you probably knew there was a "but" coming): We've never tested
LightningBug with any database backend except for MySQL.  I'd
certainly love it if LB became more portable to different RDBMS
backends, but none of the current developers have had the time to do
such a project.  We've tried for the most part to use fairly portable
SQL in the LB development, but i'm sure there is some unportable stuff
that's crept in simply because we don't test on other platforms.
There's at least one such potential minor bug documented in
library/src/class.lb.lightningbug.php (search for MySQL).
