Deleting the whole .kde directory is nothing I want anyone to do - all 
settings get lost :-(. After some research, I found the correct configuration 
file. The dialog size is stored in $HOME/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals. To 
change the size of the directory selction dialog, change the line 
"DirSelectDialog Size=" to something smaller. To change the size of the 
filedialog you have to look for the section "[KFileDialog Settings]". KDE 
creates an width and height entry for every resolution. Maybe this settings 
got somehow screwed up on your system.

I can't see anychange in the source which could have created such a problem 
after 2.8.0. I'll try to do some further research.
