That's pretty good testing ;).

The naming of the new rpm is correct, but not the way you changed the name. 
The correct way would have been to change the "Release: " field in the spec 
file from 1 to 2. RPM would then automatically have created a file 
krename-2.6.0-rc2-2.i386.rpm. This would garantee that rpm recognizes the new 
rpm as newer than the old one (because of the higher release number).
Maybe you want to create an updated rpm with the new release number, but only 
if you have enough time left!

Maybe your old redhat installation had /usr/kde/bin somehow in your $PATH. 
Just a wild guess, but might be the answer.

Yes, I will upload it tonight or tommorrow morning - I am a little bit short
