In version 0.8.3, I can no longer find the way to
hide accounts with zero balances - I am sure I had
that ability in the previous version (0.8.1 I think?)
Is it me being dim or has this functionality
disappeared?
No, it's still present. Please keep in mind, that hiding is
not based on a zero balance but on the general usage of an
account. As long as there are transactions referencing an
account, it is not/cannot be hidden. The feature can be
controlled via the settings dialog (general page).
CVS HEAD has a feature to 'close' accounts which is what
you are describing. Closed accounts will not be available
within the views and widgets (account/category selectors).
They can be re-opened if required.
Hope that helps.

Where is this feature? I enclose a screen capture of the
settings dialog general page from my installation, and I
can't see it!

I eventually located and downloaded the .cpp file to which
you refer, now, what do I do with it? I thought the most
obvious thing would be to copy it into the Kmymoney working
directory, but since I can't even find which directory that
is, that idea didn't help me much. I've really no idea
which directory it is running from!

Since I did not find the enclosed screen capture, I added
one myself here where I marked the respective option.
Another shot shows the note which will be shown if
categories have been hidden.

Downloading a single .cpp file is certainly not enough.
Please check http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/phb/cvs-examples.html#cvs-checkout
to find out how to get access to CVS HEAD which is synonym
for all current files of the bleeding edge development. Once
you have all those, you have to follow certain steps which
are covered in the README file in order to create that version.
Before installing this new version, it is important to
remove the stable version, because they cannot co-exist w/o
special care.
