I use some financial websites which require the entry of partial passwords. Each time I need to go into the website I am asked for just some specific characters from my password into boxes (e.g. "enter characters 1, 6 and penultimate" into 3 unlabelled boxes or a number of boxes each labelled with the location of the letter one must enter into it.). How can I use Keepass/addons on these sites?

Sorry about that Paul, i was looking for a plugin. I followed the instructions in the linked thread and it works like a charm! I can now improve the security of my password (it is a second stage password). Thank you again.

My CC login works as expected but I have come across a problem with my bank login. I have set up the entry as I did for the CC but when I call Autotype the selection box appears but when I hit the relevant button the first (bank) password character box loses focus and pressing the required Pickchars button does not enter anything. How can I hold focus on the input box but still operate the Pickchars buttons?

Depending on how the site is written it may not be possible to retain focus on the required field - web designers think they are being clever using lots of javascript to make it look pretty.
Switch away from the bank page to another app, then switch back and see if you can Tab to the required field.

You may also be able to click with the mouse between selecting the characters and Auto-Typing if you put a second or two delay in before the Auto-Type.

You don't need any add-ons, KeePass does this natively via {PICKCHARS}.
