IMPORTANT: Verify that you are not using the Windows User Account as part of your Master Key. If you are, you must change the Master Key to remove Windows User Account. (Always make a backup copy of your database before changing the Master Key and verify that you can open all databases that you intend to use before discarding any backups.)

Download the portable version (zip package) of the KeePass edition that you are using on your desktop (e.g. if you use 2.x on the desktop then download the 2.x portable version). Unpack the files onto your zip drive. Copy your database onto the USB drive and, if you use one, your key file.

Verify that everything works: Move to a computer that does not have KeePass installed and log in to Windows using a different user account. Connect the usb drive containing KeePass and your database. Start KeePass by double clicking on keepass.exe located on the usb drive. Once KeePass is open, use File>Open and navigate to, and select the database on the usb drive, and provide the Master Key when prompted. Your database should open for use.

Tip: key files do not provide any security if they are on the usb drive with the password database. If you use a key file and can't keep it separate consider changing your Master Key to remove the key file and increase the master password strength.

Tip: You may wish to uncheck the 'Remember and open last used on start up' setting and get used to manually opening the database file. This will avoid an alarming 'password file not found' errors that might arise if the drive letter of the usb drive changes in your travels.

Note: KeePass 2.x requires Vista or higher (or Microsoft .NET ≥2.0 installed on earlier OSes (e.g. XP)).

I travel with an Android tablet and use KeePass2Android. Then I always have secure access to my data. (Europe has wifi almost everywhere)

    cheers, Paul
