What doesn't run, KeePass itself or opening a database?

    cheers, Paul

the error message is: "...XXX failed to load the specific file !
the composite key is invalid !
make sure the composite key is correct and try again"

Keepass itself still works. I can open new files and create new datas , save, open...

Actually , if this happened to one databased only I 'd have doubted of myself and admit that I might changed the password . ( even if it' s not my way of doing...) . But it happens to Two different databases . ( which had the same simple password... by the way ) .. I am positively sure that I didnt change the masterpassword..

    • Verify that you are entering the correct master password by pressing the reveal password button when you enter the password. The reveal password button is to the right of the password field
    • Confirm that the name and location of each database is correct.
    • What is the Date modified timestamp of each database file that you cannot open?
    • What is the composition of the database Master Key?

Did it the Master Key include any of the following: key file, or windows user account? For the components that the Master Key does NOT contain, how did you determine it did not contain that component?

    Hi wellread1.

    • I 've double check the password ( by pressing the reveal button) . I do confirm (for both files) the password is the good one.

the mastekey doesn't include key file or windows user acount. it 's a very simple masterkey (6 lettres in minuscules)

The enter "Enter Master Key" dialog has several additional check boxes on it. Were/Are any of them ever checked?

    • Do you open these databases on other device(s) from OneDrive? If so, try to open them from the other device(s).

    • It looks like these databases are seldom used. It is more likely that a seldom used password will be mis-remembered. Are you certain of the passwords? I realize the passwords are short, but you should check and double check to make sure that you did not mis-remember or mis-type them.

If you don't have a backup copy of your database, check to see if there are any previous versions of your database available. Right click on the database file in the original location and select Properties from the context menu. Select the "Previous Versions" tab. Wait for the dialog to populate. If there are previous versions, restore the most recent to a NEW location. CAUTION: If you do a simple restore, the original file will be overwritten.

If nothing else works you could try a database repair.

What is the size of the database files on disk?

. when i open from onedrive it doenst work. When I open it from the harddisk ( desktop) it doesnt work neither.
. I used to open my data base everyday. I have this problem since almost one month. It 's the first time I join a discussion forum. because I realize there is so many passwords in my database that I need to understand what happen and try to recover it. I suspect a update of windows 10.....

By device I meant different computing device. Do you ever open the databases on different computers, or on a computer and a cellphone?

We seem to have exhausted the possiblities that would produce "the composite key is invalid !" error. Nevertheless KeePass, especially recent versions of the database format, include features that permit a number of checks that will distingush entering wrong Master Key from other types of errors or file corruption. The possibility that your are entering the wrong Master Key remains the most likely cause of your problem.

Unfortunately if you can't identify the reason you are receiving the error, and you can't open or repair the database, and you don't have a backup, there is nothing left to try.

I don t have any explanation . two different databases ...

I just managed to solve the problem.... i updated onedrive....
and just after, when I launched my databases ( both of them ) ... with the masterpassword ( which as I always thought did never change...) it WORKED !!!!
so , just to inform other users,.... keepass database can be corrupted when onedrive is not updated ... and the error message is the same as if the masterpassword were changed....

anyway , thanks a lot Wellread1 for your help. your idea of checking what happened with onedrive was the good one..
