When manually selecting the key file KeePass file explorer does not show any files or folders on the root of the USB drive (when you just click the drive). Expanding the drive's folders on the other hand works and it is possible to pick a file from any of those, but basically you cannot have the key file on the root of the drive. Is this intentional?

The key file I am using is a custom file not created with KeePass.

Works fine for me with or without secure desktop.

    • If you are using secure desktop, make sure to select the USB drive in the folder pane (left pane) of the file explorer.
    • If you aren't using secure desktop make sure the window file explorer file filter is set to "All Files (*.*)"

I'm also not seeing this, but regardless, FWIW, storing individual files in the root folder of any device is usually not a good idea, because root folders commonly have limits on the number of items (files or folders) they can hold, and once you get into the habit of putting files there, you can exceed those limits very quickly.

Thank you for your replies. I have been using secure desktop and always choose the drive from the left pane. It seems that NTFS file system causes the problem since everything works fine on FAT formatted USB drives.

I have tested on FAT and NTFS, with secure desktop and non-secure and I can see all files in the root of the USB drive.

    cheers, Paul

This is strange. I tested with another NTFS-formatted USB drive and it works fine but on the original it does not show anything in the root. The original USB drive is Transcend 32GB (USB3.0) whereas the working one is Lexar 8GB (USB2.0). I am using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

hi, it seems I have the same issue on win 64b with secure desktop. for the key file, the usb drive is not visible on the left pane. if I turn off the secure desktop then I can see the usb drive.

Does the USB drive appear in Windows file explorer before attempting to access it using KeePass?
What is the format of your USB drive?

yes I can see the usb drive.
In fact my key is on the SD card of my smartphone. I plug the smartphone by USB and I can browse the sd card without problem.

I can write on the sd and I can see my key file.
I can open my db if I don't use the secure desktop

I guess the problem is because the disk is discovered as "multimedia player" by Windows. Looking at the Windows disk management screen I even don't see the sd card.

yes I can do that but I would like to avoid the copy of the key somewhere else.

You have to have the key file somewhere, what's wrong with in a sub-directory?

    cheers, Paul
