    Hi folks

    Using Ubuntu v 7.09 (upgraded today - 13 Nov 07)
On Network but have 'Home' PC.
KeePass v1.09 on both local hard drive and server

Please can someone help?  I tried to install KeePass this morning but '...no application available to open this file' so I tried from other drive, ie server, and same dialogue box.

I can't understand why Ubuntu can't deal with it.  Do I need some other software to enable this?  I had no problem on my own PC at home, on Windows XP.

I hope someone can give me an easy solution!!!

    Many thanks to you all

    JMN

You need Wine to run KeePass, or use one of the other ports.

        Hi Paul

Thanks.  Please can you explain what 'Wine' is?  I have been to the site you gave the link for but couldn't find anything about 'Wine'.

However, I have downloaded and saved KeePassX 0.2.2 files from there.  I assume I need KeePassX-0.2.2.deb for Ubuntu 7.11?

I will be able to transfer the file to my pc at work tomorrow (running Ubuntu 7.11 there).  What do I have to do to run it, please?  I am a little unsure regarding Ubuntu and networks, although it also has its own hard drive, in addition to the server.  (Does that make sense???)

Thanks very much for all your help.  I do appreciate it.

        Cheers
        Julie

      Wine is Windows on Unix.
      http://www.winehq.org/

KeePassX is a *nix port of KeePass.

For full functionality you would use Wine, but KeePassX should be OK for most things. I'm not sure what files you need to run KeePassX - the KeePassX readme should have all the information.

        Thanks Paul

Are you saying that if I have Wine I won't need KeePass/X?

I have downloaded and extracted Wine and have both KeePass and KeePassX downloaded.  I am now unsure as how to proceed.

Perhaps you could give me 'step-by-step' instructions?  Bear in mind that I am really very unfamiliar with Ubuntu/Linux/Unix stuff but would be ok in Windows!

Sorry to be such a 'dork'!!!  :0  I really do appreciate any help offered regarding this – I am learning all the time, I'm pleased to say.

        Thanks
        Julie

I would try KeePassX first and see if it does what you need, then maybe try Wine.

      The Ubuntu instructions are here:

Sorry, I don't have Ubuntu running so can't give you a step by step guide.

      cheers, Paul

      Hi Paul

Thanks for your help.  I tried KeePassX but I didn't manage to sort it out.

However, I have since seen your post regarding copying the relevant files onto a USB stick, which I have done and will be interested to see if this might work, although I have my doubts.

Our more 'techie' guy at work is not too keen about password manager stuff for a variety of reasons so, for the moment, I shall have to go with that.  Hopefully, though, my USB stick might just work, in which case that will be the answer for me!

So, many thanks for all your imput.  I am learning so much all the time, thanks to you.

      Cheers

Why is your techie guy not keen on password managers? Does he use the one password for everything?

      cheers, Paul

        Hi Paul

Well, regarding work, the answer seems to be 'yes' to your question!  :)  ... but that is because he is allowing a few of us to have access to some things.

It turns out that he doesn't want me being the only person who can access data in a password manager, which I can appreciate.  However, I still want somewhere safe but easily accessible for such stuff, including personal stuff that I may need on some occasions at work.

Yesterday, I discovered KeePassX has installed and is in 'Applications' menu on Ubuntu so I have started to use it (but haven't told this guy - basically, as it is for personal data, I don't see he can object, can he? He!  He!  He!)

Anyway, thanks for your time and help

        Cheers

How can he object to you storing passwords securely? Odd!

        Hi Paul

I have to agree with you about that.  I think he is concerned that only I will have access to 'work' logons and data.  However, I also have personal data that I would like to be easily available so I have entered it all into KeePassX on Ubuntu this afternoon.  I hardly think that should be a problem to him.

i have also established that the database created by KeePass is the same file extension as KeePassX so I am able to interchange with home and work via USB stick.  Brilliant!  just what I wanted.

I shall use the same for any logon or data relating to work and others will be welcome to know the password if they are eligible for access etc.

Basically, if our 'techie' doesn't like it, tough!  As you know, it's only a 'little' program, and very non-invasive, if you know what I mean.  I do like it very much, so easy to use etc.

Anyway, many thanks for your responses and all your help.

        Enjoy Thanksgiving

        Julie

      Hi there

Forgot to say [Solved] in the subject, hence the post.

I, in fact, had installed KeePassX, in spite of not being able to 'find' it but came across it in Applications (on Ubuntu) and was able to open and enter data.

I really like KeePass and KeePassX, particularly now that I have discovered that, as they both file the Db's with the same extension, ie. .kdb, I can open the Db both at home (KeePass on WinXP) and work (KeePassX on Ubuntu).

So, Wow!  A brilliant application - thanks Dominik

      Cheers
      J
