I am getting an error that I cannot open my kdbx file, Keepass 1.x cannot open kdbx files. Use the Keepass2.x "Export" feature to migrate this file.
this worked fine yesterday and it was closed properly so not sure what is going on. I tried to run the repair tool and not success either. I had not backed it up Like I should have yesterday after adding a lot of info to it. any help is appeciated.

KeePass 1.x has never been able to open a .kbdx file. So it did not "work fine yesterday", something in your setup has changed.

    Most likely, either:

    • You're opening a different database than usual. Look for a .kdb file.
    • In the past you've been using KeePass 2.x, not version 1.x. Use version 2.x to open the file.
    • You converted your database file to the new format (maybe on another computer or mobile device, if you're opening from a cloud-synced folder).

The error message indicated that you are trying to open a KeePass 2.x database file using KeePass 1.x. The message is telling you that you must open the file using KeePass 2.x. If you still need a copy of your password data in the 1.x format after you have opened the file in KeePass 2.x, export the data to the 1x format, i.e. to a .kdb file.

To verify which KeePass edition you are using select Help>About KeePass... from the KeePass menu.

    • If you can't open the database using KeePass 2.x, what error message do you see?
    • Once the database is open in KeePass 2.x, are you able export the file to the KeePass 1.x file format i.e. .kdb? If you can't export, what steps are you taking to export the open .kdbx file?

You may find it simpler to pick one edition of KeePass and use only that edition. A comparison of the two editions is available at http://keepass.info/compare.html.

Hello, I'm here because I have the same problem. I have been using Version 2 for quite sometimes without any problem. But today I tryed to update on my 3 other devices from my main pc. And it was not all plain sailing as before.
Here are the steps I use. (I'm no savy and am restricted in thech understanding...)
1 I upload my main pc's file in the cloud
2 I rename it to know it's the last updated data
3 I go to my 3 other devices and download that file locally.
4 I (try to) open the file locally. which should open later on with the Keepass icon on my task bar.
5 I delete that file from the cloud after downloading it from my main pc. and store the previous one out of the desk top

Recently I tried to install KP 2 version 2.57. and there were some problems to install but it seems it's on.
    - My problem on my old pc >>>" this file format is not suported" !?*
-Then with my Samsung phone I got a similar problem but finally was opening... One thing I noticed on my phone was that suddenly I could edit my entries and also add an entry! Before I never could do this. (When I save the edited entry or the new one I got a msg that it wouldnt be changed on the source file , I don't understand this.
-I had no problem at all with my lap top! (All runing W10)
(I did not update keepass 2 on my phone or my 2 other devices. ) .
    All my files are .kdbx

Michael, that sounds like two different problems.

On your main PC you should have the master database. This file should never change, but it should be backed up.
Copying the master database to the cloud and then to 3 other devices should allow you to open the file on each device.

On your phone, you must have got something wrong (often typing the password judging by the issues posted here). As it is now working this seems the most likely scenario.

On your old PC, we need the exact error message.
It is possible you are attempting to open the wrong file?

    cheers, Paul
