Using KeePass what is the distinction between a plugin and an extension?

I am a newb, so please forgive if a dumb question, but both words appear in the page title on the KeePass site: "KeePass Plugins and Extensions" from the Plugin link. If there is a difference, in the KeePass context--what is it? How can one tell if the item listed is a plugin or an extension?

You are adding functionality to KeePass.
