lost file, I opened keepass and it was empty. I tried to find all my passwords but couldn't. I'm not sure it caused the problem but I was getting a popup to load a new version and tried to. After that everything was gone... HELP!!!

Nothing is gone, KeePass has forgotten where you keep your database.

Open KeePass and select File > Open > Find Files > Quick.
KeePass will show you a list of database files it has found.
    Choose the most likely candidate.

    cheers, Paul

    Paul,
I looked and still can't find it. There should be a file that has a 2020 or 2021 time stamp and the latest is early 2019. This is a real bummer.. Any more ideas?

If File>Open>Find Files.... 'Quick' didn't find anything, use File>Open>Find Files... and select the 'Normal' search. It is much slower than 'Quick' but it is thorough.

It is possible that you have opened your database, but it appears empty. The view pane borders may have been arranged so that they obscure the database contents. To correct, drag the view pane borders so that the entries are visible. I have attached a screenshot of this would look like.

    • Did you manually delete any files when you updated?
    • Do you know where your database is normally stored? If so where? For example "on a usb flash drive", or "in a KeePass folder in my Documents folder"

Ok, I found the database file (1.x version) but it shows I had a 1,X on my old computer. since I loaded the new 2.X it wont allow me to import the database from my old computer. It says I need to create a 2,X database file and then import it. I've tried multiple times but its not working.

If you want to continue using KeePass 1.x (which is still actively developed) open KeePass 1.x and continue to use. A 2.x update won't remove KeePass 1.x.

If you want to switch to KeePass 2.x you can import a 1.x database into a 2.x database. Create a new database in KeePass 2.x and while the new database is open select File>Import. Select 'KeePass 1.x KDB' and follow the prompts.

KeePass 1.x and 2.x are not compatible so you need to decide which one you want to use.
