I use KeePass religiously,,daily, across 4 different machines (windows 32) and then the mini on iPad and iPhone.
I'd be up the creek w/out a paddle without it, and so yes I took a small lunch collection up at work
and one of us sent the donation in- you're all great...until I needed to update!
I've read everything there is.
In my Program Files The file is called KeePass Password safe 2
I've tried to open the .exe program, it asks with what? so I choose ShInstallUtil
CANT
i try new download of 2.35 hopeful it'll know how to update itsself, it wont let me keep it to program file- saying I dont have permission (logged in as admin).
In short I've read Help section, and lost a good 6 work hours trying to solve what should be
a simple , choice upon opening....
A new version is available would you like to update now?
and hit YES....
is this too hard to write into the app?
PLEASE>.......
I keep such sensitive data, and love KeePass 2 and a couple other goodies
EXCEPT
.......nuts THAT i CANT SIMPLY UPDATE TO A NEWER VERSION!.
what am I missing?
Im not that stupic, just behind the current (I used work on software design, proabably beforeyou were all born)...LOL
You have file extensions hidden. The file you're seeing listed as "KeePass.exe" is actually "KeePass.exe.config", and the one you should be clicking on to run KeePass is the one with the blue lock in a circle icon.

There have been a couple security fixes (deleting temp files that were left in some situations, securing the update check from MITM attacks), many improvements and bugfixes, in addition to the new features in the two years since version 2.29 was released. Some of the new features are small but very useful, like an advanced auto-type menu that can be enabled to auto-type only portions of an entry instead of the whole thing. I'd recommend upgrading regardless of what Paul said. :-)
As T. Bug Reporter says, you tried to launch the wrong file if you were trying to launch KeePass.exe, because you've hidden file extensions. But KeePass.exe is the wrong file to launch anyway to do an update. That's just the installed KeePass program that you've been using every day. This is simply the program that runs when you double-click your database, or when you click the KeePass shortcut in your start menu, or when you start your computer and KeePass automatically launches, depending on how you normally use KeePass.
KeePass has no automatic update feature. You need to download version 2.35 and run the downloaded installer program. BEFORE you run, you should right-click and choose "Properties" and verify that it is signed by Dominik. After that, right-click on the downloaded installer and choose "run as administrator". You said you're logged in as admin, however in Windows versions starting at Vista, UAC does not automatically grant admin rights to a program even when you run while logged into the admin account. You need to explicitly grant admin access to it. I'm surprised the UAC prompt doesn't pop up to ask for admin rights, but right-clicking and running as administrator should fix problems installing to Program Files.
Note you should probably use File->Exit on KeePass if it is running before installing the update.

It isn't necessary to update KeePass unless you want to use one of the new features.
cheers, Paul
