Further investigation indicates that Keepass zeroed out the file on closing.

    Your database file is damaged.

    • You can try to repair it using the steps described in: https://keepass.info/help/base/repair.html.
    • If there is a file in the same directory as your database having same base name as your database with a tmp exentension, it may be an intact copy of your database. Make a copy of it an see if you can open it.
    • If you have a backup copy of your database, you can restore that file.

If you need help or suggestions, post additional details in the Help forum.

Problem - there is no option "Tools' → 'Repair KeePass Database File...'." as mentioned in the wellread1 response suggested html file. I have version 2.39.1 of the software. Also, I can find no tmp file with the same name anywhere on my system. Also my file was on a NAS with 1 million MTBF drives in it. Got a firmware update from the manufacturer. My file system disappeared. They helped me get it back. Just wasn't showing up. All files and folders were still there. I opened the keyfile once, used it to get a password, then closed it, and the file is now zero length. Name still shows up in the directory, just no data in it. Want to cuss a little here, but will refrain.

Update - Found a bunch of files (weird way) on the NAS in its recycle folder name "Copy #xx of <database name="">.kdbx". Took the latest one, which is 9 days old, and was able to open it. Lost a couple of new passwords I created in the last 9 days. But at least I got most of the data back by renaming this file to the original file name and opening it.

You need to implement a regular backup procedure so that you don't have to rely on good fortune to recover from a forseeable disaster.

This doesn't sound like a KeePass bug. It seems more likely that it some residual problem arising from the faulty NAS firmware install. The help forum is venue appropriate for seeking assistance to recover from bad outcomes.

Repair is unlikely to fix an empty database file. The repair option is accessed via the import menus. Repair provides the possibility to import data from a damaged database into a new database.

Based on your description, restoring a backup copy of your database might be the only option.

If you did not save the file then KeePass can not have changed the file. Did you modify / save?

    cheers, Paul
