FWIW, I've always used the gcc included with XCode, since you have to have it to install MacPorts - not sure why MacPorts would have installed its own copy of gcc. Anyway, this is consistent with my hypothesis that you were getting multiple runtime libraries at runtime (from gcc, not just Python).
