I have only played with it for a couple of days so my understanding of the details is somewhat rough. However, here's my view of the scripting support in java 1.6: What the so called "scripting support" does is it standardizes the interface between a java program and the so called scripting engine. i.e. the calling program uses the same API to talk to the script regardless of what language the script is implemented in. In other words, its essentially, its a "binding convention" of sorts - a set of interfaces that the scripting engine is supposed to implement so that the interface between the java program and the script looks the same no matter what the scripting language. It is patterned on the rhino implementation of javascript (indeed thats the only language that is bundled with java 1.6) but one can register other "scripting engines" so long as the scripting engine implements the requisite interfaces. If this would be of interest, I can work on implementing the glue for jython (but I'd need some help with jython).
