When it will be available in some "stable" version, like beta (sorry for a
tautology)? I do not have a problem with running pre released versions, but
patching some files from some sources is too much.

popen & friends are available in CVS.
They work like the CPython versions on WinNT & Unix. (shell behavior is
not very portable as a rule, and trying to get at shell behavior from
Java is a real adventure...)
The CVS version will work with Jython 2.1, but you may have to remove a
'from __future__ import division' line.
Ask a specific question, get a specific answer. :-)
