A few weeks ago there was a post from someone who had Jython
running under java 1.4 _faster_ than CPython on the same machine.

[Jython-dev] Slightly corrupt CVS repository

For some time now, our web CVS have not worked correctly:

Finally I managed to track the problem to the Java2Accessibility.py,v
file in the CVS repository. The "rlog" command cannot be executed on
this file. 

From the start of the Java2Accessibility.py,v:

As an experiment, I tried to remove the strange "2.0:1.1.0.2;" line from
the file and then I could run rlog on the file.

Does anyone know if/how we can fix this?

As a last resort I suppose I can attach my hand edited version to a SF
support request where I ask them to copy my file to the CVS server. To
this day I have never been very successful whenever I have tried to edit
files in a CVS repository so I'm reluctant to do this.

There was a bit of a buzz concerning improving Jython's documentation
a while back that inspired a wiki page at:

Nobody has really contributed there since it was set up, and I've ran into
some deadline troubles of my own that have kept me away from it as well.
It would be nice to see your suggestion become an addition there, and
possibly enliven the place.

Otherwise, you could consider revising the language of
http://www.jython.org/docs/jythonc.htm and send proposed changes.

On another note...
I'm curious about what your deliverable is, so I'm guessing others might
be as well. Is it something that should be added to:

There isn't any special treatment of embedded use.

What gives you that impression? If you make modification to the jython
source, you have to indicate the nature of the modifications. For
example:

   - bug fixed in jython
   - improved embedability of jython.

You could can write that right next to all the copyright lines that you
also have to show somewhere:

The licenses allows you to do almost everything except:

   - claiming that you wrote it
   - suing the authors.

[Jython-dev] Java/Jython is wonderful!

After following the various freeze instructions, and experimenting with
some little Java classes to load my Jython program, my package's
INSTALL.txt reads:

Installation of FamilyRelations
-------------------------------

0. Make sure that a 'java' commmand is in your path somewhere.

1. Untar/unzip the distribution into some directory somewhere.

2. Run:

   run.bat             <-- (under Windows)

or

   run.sh              <-- (under UNIX)

That's it!  Note that you can edit 'run.{bat,sh}' to point to the correct
'java' program, if you don't want to modify your path.

I suspected that freezing was the way to go, but the XXXs and complete
lack of examples on that page were not so helpful -- in particular, it
is only through involved contextual reading that I just realized that
"freezing" is clearly stated to be a result of '-j file --deep'...

Yes it runs great if you can input by keyboard. It's so cool to have an
on-device OO scripting language on top of a JVM.

Steps involved:
===========

1. download from http://www.embedded.oti.com/ and install j9 to pocketpc
\vame1.3, make sure you can run the demos
2. download jython2.1a1 from http://www.jython.org , copy \jython-2.1a1 to
pocketpc \jython-2.1a1
3. copy Sun's JRE1.1.8 files from "C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.1" to
pocketpc \JRE1.1
4. create a shortcut RunJython.lnk using the following 4 lines concated (on
a single line seperated by " ") on your desktop PC and copy it to
\jython-2.1a1:
119#"\vame1.3\j9.exe"
 "-bp:\vame1.3\classes.zip"
 "-cp:\JRE1.1\lib\rt.jar;\jython-2.1a1\jython.jar"
 "org.python.util.jython"

Sample session:

1. J9 Console gets updated so that it complies to latest pocketpc UI

it does not work; without rt.jar jython cannot "import java". Any other
idea?

Although it's a little tricky to setup, and the UI of IBM J9 console is
targeted at WinCE 2.x. I will provide instructions shortly. Cheers!

This isn't really trail-blazing. The jythonc docs are fairly helpful, and
are located at:

The cliff-notes are:

Option 1. runnable-
A "runnable" Jython module is one compiled with jythonc without
tracking dependencies. This requires attention to paths to ensure
dependencies are located and loaded (by setting -Dpython.home, or by
explicitly appending to sys.path). If module A imports module B, you make
runnable classes with:

    jythonc A.py

Option 2. frozen-
A "frozen" application is one compiled with the --deep option so that
dependancies are tracked. This sounds most useful to your situation
consider you say you are distributing an application (implies that it
doesn't require subsequent changes).

To freeze A.py use:

    jythonc --deep -j myapp.jar A.py

This compiles A.py and B.py and places the compiled classes in myapp.jar.
This jar plus jython.jar (plus any other jars you use) is all that is
required to run your app.

You can be increasingly lazy and use the following:

    jythonc --all -j myapp.jar A.py

This tracks dependencies and packages up core, parser, and compiler
goodies so everything you need is potentially within this jar (not
including external jars you depend on).

Option 3. Custom import

You'll have to figure it out on your own ;)

A little progress, thought the group would be interested:

I copied the jython.jar of 2.1a1 over, and tried to run a simple script
on pjava

    import java
    f = open('\\temp\\test1.txt', 'w')
    print >>f, java.util.Date()
    f.close()

The same script runs okay on pjava emulator on the desktop, but failed
with the following message:

    Traceback (innermost last):
      File "<console>", line 1, in ?
    ImportError: no module named java

in the java console. I noticed that different even from the pjava
emulator, the StrongArm pjava does not have rt.jar or classes.zip, in
stead, it got a larger javai.dll. I guess jython imports from the
classpath, that probably can explain why the import failed while --help
works fine.

Because WinCE does not provide a command prompt, testing the above
involves either using the "Run" dialog easter egg and typing the whole
pjava command line, or editing a shortcut from a connected desktop.

I also heard about the Visual Age Micro Edition from IBM, the j9 runtime
got a java console that accepts input, and uses classes.zip, so I might
give that a shot tonight.

Right. At the moment jythonc only tracks classes and types in the
stringpool. It doesn't track fields.

Please open a bugreport on SF with you example so we don't forget about
the problem.

Just got myself an iPaq 3670, and tried Sun's Personal Java
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/personaljava/ on it, it
runs okay. This is basicly a Java1.1 runtime without Swing, but awt and JNI
is supported.

I'm thinking it probably will be really cool to have Jython running on top
of it. That way, I can develop or at least test out my idea w/o the need of
an extra PC.

Will probably give it a try this weekend. But by looking at Pocket Scheme
site http://www.angrygraycat.com/scheme/pscheme.htm , esp.
http://www.angrygraycat.com/scheme/cestdio.htm it seems WinCE lacks stdio. I
doubt Sun's pjava has support in it.

Can any of the developers give some insight on what area of code I need to
look, and what kind of workaround there might be?

Willing  to invest some time to get it working if I can get some help from
the jython team.

will not include a/B.class in the jar file.
As a result

$java -cp c.jar C

will crash with a class a/B.class not found exception.

Java does not have pipes, so Jython cannot provide them.
I think the closest thing you can do is create a process and use
Java calls to give it input and to read it's output. I don't
know whether Jython has some standard module that lets you do that.

The following seems to be a bug in Jython2.0

JAVA:
public class A {
  public A () {
    foo();
  }
  protected void foo () {
    System.out.println("A");
  }
  protected void goo () {
    foo();
  }
}

JYTHON:
import A
class B(A):
    def __init__(self):
        A.__init__(self)
    def foo(self):
        print "B"

b = B() # prints A -- OUCH!! BAD!!
b.foo() # prints B -- good
b.goo() # prints B -- good

[Jython-dev] import regsub in jython cannot be achieved

	Hello,

After some experience in Python, I am now trying to convert some of my .py file to be execute in Jython. And some troubles stop me at the moment.

Is there a way to use the facilities of the split of regular expression in jython like I did in Python with import regsub ?
