You can use all the different String.getBytes(..) methods likes this:

A little typo: it's sys.add_extdir(..).

The addJar() will not cache the result. And, yes it is a bit of an abuse
because packagemanager methods is not part of the stable public API.

If there is a wish for this, we should add another method to sys:

   sys.add_jar("/path/to/file.jar")

Can anyone come up with a better name since the .jar can also be a .zip
file?

The property is "python.cachedir", and you can set it in the call to
PythonInterpreter's initialize method.  Jython's registry file explains the
python.cachedir property.

        Properties props = new Properties();
        props.put("python.home", "/path/to/jython");
	props.put("python.cachedir", "/path/to/cachedir");
	PythonInterpreter.initialize(System.getProperties(),

Dear developers,

I have checked the user forums and FAQs but, perhaps due to my own 
incompetence, I have not found an explanation to overcome a serious 
problem I have encountered using Jython 2.2 on Mac OSX 10.1.1.

Each time I launch Jython, Jython reads in the jars in the classpath and 
tries, unsuccessfully, to cache them (somewhere I do not know). Because 
of this failure, each time I launch Jython it tries again in vain to 
cache the jars polluting standard out with its failures and corrupting 
the return values to Applescript when I launch Jython using a Shell OSAX 
( DLL that allows Applescirpt to execute Unix shell commands and read 
their returns). I find this very frustrating since I use Jython to give 
Applescript a GUI interface that is both easy to use and quasi-standard 
in that it is Java Swing.

I have provided the output below to aid you if it helps. I would 
appreciate any advice you could give to tell me where the jars are 
cached since I believe it is a permissions problem that prevents them 
from being effectively cached.  Or perhaps you have another idea?

[Jython-dev] Problem with creating Jar caches on Mac OSX 10.1.1

Each time I run Jython, I receive errors as Jython tries to cache every 
single jar file (elaborated below).  The problem is that ,since these 
files are never cached, the launch of Jython is delayed each time as 
Jython each launch attempts to cache them and fills standard out with 
the chronology of the attempts. Even worse, if I launch Jython from a 
command string in Applescript which I often do, I must filter out all 
the these errors on the return string in order to get to the information 
returned by Jython. Since I use Jython as a GUI in OSX because it 
supports Java 2 natively in OSX as opposed to Python TK which requires 
hacks to run X Windows, I find this very disappointing. I have tried to 
figure out where Jython is attempting to cache these interpreted jars so 
that I might change permissions which might be hindering this, but I 
have not been successful. Do you have any hints you can pass on to me? A 
search of the user groups has yielded nothing on this subject.

[Jython-dev] Import strange error

Hi all,

I have already sent some mail, but sadly got no answer... There is a=20
really strange problem that I have to solve very quickly: I want to=20
extend a class that I have written, which is=20
net.sourceforge.spedit.ui.AttributesDisplay. To do so I import the=20
net.sourceforge.spedit.ui package.

When I do a dir(net.sourceforge.spedit.ui) it lists me AttributesDisplay=20=

and the other classes which are in the package. The problem occurs when=20=

it comes to accessing this class. When I do a print=20
net.sourceforge.spedit.ui. AttributesDisplay jython says=20
"AttributeError: java package 'net.sourceforge.spedit.ui' has no=20
attribute 'AttributesDisplay'" which is obviously false.

I don't understand what is happening...

Here I am making use of BioPython Api to fetch the Gene details 
thro NCBI Database server. If it is in Python environment it works
fine. But If I convert that Python class to Java class using the
Jython tool and try to run java (python) class it is throwing an

  I am trying to run a free internet raffle web site and need help figuring 
out weather or not there are free scripts avaible on the internet that will 
help me do this or will I have to pay someone?

Here's how I would like to run the free internet raffle.

You come to my web site after seeing an ad on an internet classified site 
here's how the front page reads:

Welcome to the free internet raffle. This months first prize is: (descripiton 
of prize.)

All you have to do to enter is click on one of the banners below. You will be 
taken to that sponsors web site, then while your being taken to that web page 
a pop-up window will appear in the upper right hand corner. In it will be 
your entry form. Please fill out all feilds completely. Once you have filled 
out the form your by clicking on the submit button, ticket number will appear 
in that window please write it down for your records.


Then at the end of the month one number will be choosen to win the prize. 

That's how I would like to io run. It would be even better if a confirmation 
of the entry were could be sent to myself and the person entering the raffle. 
But this is what I a trying to do. I was told by another webmaster that it 
might be a combination of PHP and java(scripts.)

Well, if  you can tell me what scripts they are I'd appreciate it.

This indicate that jython was installed with the JRE, not the JDK. A
common problem because javasoft creates a c:\winnt\system32\java.exe
that points to the JRE when installing the JDK. The easiest way to fix
it is to re-install jython by giving the full path to the correct JDK
java.exe:

C:\jdk1.3.1_01\bin\java.exe -cp . jython-21a3

So the java support in the browser must support Java3D. I just want to
point out that the applet can't run with the default java support in IE

The particular items that Finn was wondering about for AS/400 are the 
'current directory' and 'parent directory' strings (in Unix/dos they are 
'.' and '..', respectively).  Do you know those strings? More below.

The most recent non-cvs snaphot release is 2.1a3, and that should work 
fine (it is what I've been using). Not sure about .1a2 and older.

There is a (rather poorly factored) __test() method, and basically, if 
it didn't throw an exception, it mostly worked.  :-)  However, it 
executes several 'system' commands and it really only looks at the first 
line of output, and doesn't check that very well... You can check 
visually as it prints the command it is executing, and you can see if 
the output makes sense for that command... (yuck)

I would expect it to fail pretty miserably on AS400 right now (and 
Macintosh, if anyone out there is interested in getting it working for 
Mac), because it only knows to execute commands with 'cmd /c COMMAND' or 
'command.com /c COMMAND' or 'sh -c COMMAND', so on Mac we don't get any 
system/environment functionality, and on AS400 it will likely try to 
work like Unix, and fail.

javaos.py needs the following information for a new platform (and if you 
can give some earlier items w/o the later items, it can give partial 
functionality):

1- how to recognize the new platform, that is, what System.getProperty( 
"os.name" ) returns and any variations on it, and an internal name for 
the platform (as400?). This is used to determine which values are used 
for the following items.
2- os.curdir, os.pardir need current directory and parent directory 
strings ('.', and '..', respectively).
3- os.system needs the command to "execute a command in a shell" ('sh -c').
4- os.environ needs os.system and the command to print out the 
environment as "name=value" pairs. Also, needs to know if the 
environment variable names are case sensitive (unix) or insensitive (dos).

... which reminds me that we can provide 'os.system' even if we can't 
get environment variables, which isn't supported by the current 
_ShellEnv/_NullEnv factoring...

I need to fix the default behavior - I don't think the CPython behavior 
(import error if no os-specific module available) is right for Jython. I 
think I'll convert back to the original "empty environment" as the 
fallback - though the additional testing/feedback provided by having it 
enabled is nice!  :-)

Oh, duh.  The SimpleHTTPServer.py script would be called directly from 
jython/Lib, not from CPython/Lib.

Hmm, I see (having just reproduced the error on my debian box).

Though wouldn't this error still occur even if the standard jython 
installation method were used (all files duplicated in jython/Lib, no CPython 
directories on the python path at all)?  I assume the problem is that the 
directory containing the script is placed first in sys.path, and I don't see 
how using the standard jython installation method will get around this.

Perhaps I'm missing something..?

That is exactly how I run from CVS and how I manage the CPython modules
in jython's CVS. Except for the problem with socket.py, it is a good
scheme.

No. A bit too fragile for my taste, but if debian have a good dependency
system it may work for you.

In 2.1b1 we will also include a sizeable part of the modules from PyXML

  http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyxml

in the installer. A little twist on the PyXML support is that some of
the non-supported drivers must *not* be included in order to complete
part of the PyXML test suite.

Yes, unless the import is performed when a module in Python-211/Lib is
used as a script. SimpleHTTPServer.py is such a module that can also be
started as a command line script. Then the Python-211/Lib directory is
first in sys.path and an import of socket.py will pick up the socket.py
from Python-211/lib. I think there is another example, but I have forgot
which.
