I have a program that I am struggling with I need your
advice.

It is an AOL Time Warner program with these channels:
Disney (DIS), Home Bbox office(HBO), ShowTime(SHO),
and Cinemax(MAX). At the end of the month, the
marketing development submits to the IT department, a
slip of paper for each different type of premium
service sold. Each slip contains


1. The premium service(DIS,HBO,SHO or MAX)
2. The month of sale(01-12)
3.  The total value of that premium service sold that
month



 I have to write a program that uses a 12 by 4 double
subscripted array. The program reads all the sales
data for the month and summarizes the total sales by
premimum serivce. All totals should be stored in the
double subscripted array sales. After processing all
the information, display the  results in tabular
format with each of the columns representing a premium
service and each of the rows representing a particular
month. Total the colums to get the sales total of each
premium serivce for the year. Total each row to get
the sales total by month.

I have to use arrays and JApplet and ActionListener

I am a hard workng college student if you can help me
I will greatly appreciate it.

I believe that is using 'sh' as its sub-shell.  Interesting - can you run 'sh' from the normal AS/400 shell?

Could you please send me the output of the following? (You may need javaos.py v2.12 from CVS - I did some renaming to make things more consistent with other modules)

But it is likely to make me wish I had gone ahead and refactored _ShellEnv._getEnvironment out into _getEnvironment and _parseEnvironment...  :-)

Some ideas (brainstorm mode):
- a problem with quoting?  try os.system( '"java -version"' )
- a problem with the encoding of the space or the hyphen?  maybe try a "java helloWorld"?
- a path problem (different java executables?)
- from the shell, can you do (I don't know if the "" is right to keep the command in a single arg on AS/400...):  
	sh -c "java -version"

You could try messing around with Runtime.exec() directly to see what works (and this is suggesting refactoring _ShellEnv._system's "print the streams" logic into another method).

p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec( ['sh', '-c', 'java -version'] ) # should be what is being done now
print _shellEnv._readLines( p.getInputStream() )

and use it like 'echo' above to see how it is seeing the arguments passed to 'exec'...

Yip, I added those tests when I discovered similar behavior...  :-)

This is probably the same problem as #3 - the secondary arguments are not getting passed correctly to echo command, so echo is cheerfully echoing a blank line...

When I encountered this behavior, I was working with the String form of Runtime.exec, executing strings like 'sh -c "my command"'  and the behavior was different on NT, NT-cygwin, and Linux - some of those platforms worked with the quoted command, others would fail with the quotes, but give the 'one command, no args' behavior you're seeing if they didn't have the quotes.  

Using the exec( String[] ) form works better, because you specify the argv array for the shell w/o worrying about quoting, so the shell gets exactly:  "-c", "java -version", ...  At least in theory...

    Is there an upperbound on the size of a Jython file? We've got a Jython
file that is a long, flat list of commands (it's essentially a configuration
file). Around 2855 lines/114750 bytes, we get the following error:

Traceback (innermost last):
  (no code object) at line 0
java.lang.ClassFormatError: org/python/pycode/_pyx0 (Code of a method
longer than 65535 bytes)


This looks like Java has a problem with a method being more than 64K of
bytecode. Is that the issue?

The answer: don't expect jythonc to cope properly with program-driven
changes to sys.path and similar dynamic stuff.

jythonc is a *static* tool.

Ahh, but I have contraindications!  In a more complicated piece of code,
dynamic modifications to sys.path result in jythonc finding and correctly
compiling (and including in the output .jar) files from other directories
that were specified only in sys.path.

So, if no dynamic modifications to sys.path should work for jythonc, then I
don't understand why it *does* work occasionally; and if dynamic modifications
*should* work, then I don't understand why it *isn't* for other projects.

If anyone wants to take a look to see what I mean, check out the latest
version of FamilyRelations:

	cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/familyjewels login

	cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/familyjewels co FamilyRelations

and do

cd FamilyRelations && make

(you may need to modify the separator from : to ; in some of the classpaths).
This works.  It's worked for a long time.  I don't understand why doing what
is as far as I can tell the same sort of thing isn't working now!

But I gather that if there is a bug, it's not a well known one ;).

Yeah, I've done that, too... but it wasn't relevant to the jythonc report ;).

What Samuele is referring to:

I have an odd situation.  Imagine the following setup:

test1.py
test2.py
source/test3.py

where test1.py contains:

-- test1.py

import test2, sys
sys.path.append('source/')
import test3

--

This works fine with 'jython test1.py'.  It works fine if I do

'jythonc --all -j out.jar test1.py test2.py source/test3.py', move out.jar
to another directory, put it in the classpath, and type 'import test1' into
jython.

However, it does not work if I do

'jythonc --all -j out.jar test1.py'

It finds the test2 dependency, but not the test3 dependency.

Even odder is that in one of my projects -- the only one for which I can
make a simple distribution -- 'jythonc --all -j out.jar start.py' includes
all of the files upon which start.py is dependent.

I can't figure out what makes some things work and others not; are there any
hints that anyone can give me?  (I'd compile jython myself and just put
printlns in, but I can't compile it at the moment.)

Instead of trying to use seek, use "append" mode when opening the
file.

A note to current CVS user. I have changed the way .zip/.jar files is
added to sys.path. This change will break the way that zipfiles can be
added to sys.path.

This new trigger for a .zip/.jar file search is:

   '/path/to/file.zip'

or 

   '/path/to/file.zip/path/in/archive'

This is expected to match the way CPython-2.3 will allow a .zip file
with python modules to be added to sys.path:
