Actually I am in favor of this solution (originally thought of it
myself), but never implemented it, since it will probably require a
large amount of work.

Yes, I was working on it during a longer session on the train.:-)
However, it is currently not in a stable state. What I wanted to do is:
- cleanup the structure of the code
- implement many of the XML querying stuff using "standard" means like
"XPath" such that extending the code gets easier.
The latter has been included in .7 CVS, though (although it appears to
have an impact on performance...)
