Since I use an x-windows client (ctwm) which allows me to jump from one workspace to the next by hitting control-arrow, joe's nifty "control-arrow selects from where you are to where you're going" function doesn't work for me. I had been relying on control-space as an easy way to start and stop selections...but now control-space is "insert space." Skimming the man page, I can't figure out how to get this "start selecting/stop selecting/clear selection" functionality back. Is it a new key now? Any easy way to configure what ^space does?

Look for " toggle_marking ^@" in the joerc file- delete the leading space. Also insert a space in front of the next line, which should be "insc ^@".
