Well, Dan, I'm not expert in the intricacies of what combinations of things are needed in order to build, but this does not strike me as an OS version kind of thing. (That often had to do with where dynamic libraries go in the virtual address space, and whether they conflict with where Jikes RVM wans to put things.) No, what you're getting is an internal failure in the Jikes source-to-bytecode compiler, a separate tool (without a confusingly similar name). It is well known that Jikes RVM stresses any JVM used to build it. You should check your jikes version and maybe get another one, or try a different JVM for the build process.
