Jan,
    Thank you, that was it.  I was still using a 2.3 servletapi.jar 
file.  I also realized that I had
checked out the trunk of CVS, which appears to be the 5.0 codebase.   My 
changes have
now been committed to the 4.2 branch so I was able to go back to using 
the 4.2.14rc1
official release.  Everything is working great again.
