Is there any way to make the auto complete pop up appear as I type
instead of having to hit C+B every time?

Use the TextAutoComplete plugin.

Yes, but it uses a different word list.

Have a look at TextAutocomplete,
I really don't use it, but its description states it does exactly what  
you're asking about.
