Our site is currently quite out of date. The java-gnome team is interested in finding somebody that will take responsibility to stay informed on the status of the project, coordinate with all of the translators, and ensure that the site is kept up-to-date. Hi, i´m working on porting a password manager written in swing to java-gnome and, at the same time, i´m writing a glade tutorial with those things wich i´m learning. Now i´m working on treeview and i´ve got a little problem. When i get the libglade widget i try to add new nodes to the tree, but treeview doesn´t respond. I´m doing something like this: //************** CODE *******************// main = (Window) libglade.getWidget("main"); tree = (TreeView) libglade.getWidget("treeview"); // Make some data blocks to refer to the data for the tree DataBlockString dataString = new DataBlockString(); DataBlockInt dataInt = new DataBlockInt(); DataBlockBoolean dataBool = new DataBlockBoolean(); DataBlockPixbuf dataPix = new DataBlockPixbuf(); [....] // create a new column to be visible in the output, set a title for it and // append it to the tree. TreeViewColumn column1 = new TreeViewColumn(); column1.setTitle("Main Data"); tree.appendColumn( column1 ); tree.show(); main.showAll(); //************** CODE *******************// That last lines should to include the new column to the tree, as shown in java-gnome examples... but as i said, it doesn´t happens anything. Doing something like tree = new TreeView(store); didn´t help. In swing i often modified trees getting the tree model and working on it: DefaultTreeModel model; model = (DefaultTreeModel)controlador.cvp.win.jt.getModel(); //insercion del nuevo nodo en el jtree model.insertNodeInto(nuevoNodo, chosen, 0); but this doesn´t seems to work on java-gnome. Can anyone help me or send me a treeview java-gnome example designed in glade? Thanks a lot. -- Alex Moreno |

In the latest gnome/gtk development libs the UIInfo and ItemFactory classes have been deprecated. The developers have introduced a new Action based menu/toolbar creation and management API. I am currently incorporating this into java-gnome. cvs has the latest work in progress but please don't rush out and test it because there are still several problems with the code and the RadioAction event propagation is not complete. The API that is currently in java-gnome is nearly identical to the gtk library. I have written an example program that demonstrates the new classes and I would like to get your feedback. Please let me know if you like this approach and what we might be able to do to improve on the gtk implementation. The example is attached. -Jeff <<UIManagerExample.java>> |

I have just applied this patch to the HEAD. Thanks for the patch. We can apply this to our 0.8.2 support stream. Please be aware, in gtk 2.3.x the OptionMenu has been deprecated. Thanks for you help. The gconf module was something I had just started when we joined the GNOME Platform Bindings. I know it is currently half baked and have not had a chance to return to it to fix a few of the errors. Read this (from Mark Wielaard): <quote> Hi all, After finally getting the latest Eclipse 3.0 M4 working with gij <http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/java/2003-11/msg00024.html> I tried to get the java-gnome bindings <http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/> and the eclipse java-gnome plugin wizard <http://zeta.zizworks.com/public/projects/java-gnome.do> all working together. </quote> It should work with java-gnome too. > Has anyone tried to provide java/javac wrappers for gij/gcj? Read above. > I think that, instead of fool > configure, we should fix it. Agreed, but this implies at least we provide an option for all compiler interpreters around, and this could be not very easy to mantain. Maybe you could provide some patches for adding options to use gij as interpreter and gcj as bytecode compiler, (apart from using it as a native lib compiler). Also, if you are going to hack on it, please use the cvs head version ;) -- Luca De Rugeriis <pie...@li...> |

If there isn't, I think it's a configure bug. GCJ can compile to bytecodes (can do the same work as jikes or kaffe kjc) and it includes a VM, started by command gij, so it can execute regular java apps compiled to bytecodes. You should need anything except GCJ to compile java-gnome. Has anyone tried to provide java/javac wrappers for gij/gcj? Red Hat Linux used to provide these wrappers (to compile OpenOffice 1.0.x, not needed anymore for 1.1.0). This will be my next attemp, but I think that, instead of fool configure, we should fix it. Maybe I am not understanding the configure options correctly, or --help is not showing all them. What I want to acomplish: 1. Build Java-Gnome (or at least java-gtk and java-glade packages) using only GCJ/GIJ, no need for another JVM/javac. So far configure allways complains it needs a JDK. :-( 2. Then I'd try to hack java-gnome so it builds using mingw/msys, the Win32 port of GCC and GCJ. I tried to hack the conventional build, but it proved to be too hard (at least for me) to reconciliate the differences betweeb Posix-based conventions of make, bash and so on (from msys) and Windows conventions from the JDK. I managed to get some results, but no simple app could be made to run. I hope using only GCJ will ease the Win32 port. If it's possible to to this using 0.8.2, I'll insist and apreciante any hint. I've moved on to trying to port libgconf-java to FreeBSD, and I'm running into numerous problems. I looked at your CVS, but it doesn't look like the split exists there, so I'm wondering if you have another repo somewhere other than Sourceforge. In any event, here's what I'm seeing. First of all, configure is looking for gtk/src/jni/org_gnu_gtk_Gtk.c to find the source code. This file doesn't exist in the GConf bindings. I had to change ac_unique_file to src/jni/org_gnu_gconf_ConfClient.c to get configure to run. Second, configure doesn't both to check for _any_ GConf libs. This causes the build to die in the linking phase. Third, there are a lot of C99-isms in src/jni/org_gnu_gconf_ConfClient.c. Attached is a patch that fixes them as well as some other compiler warnings. Fourth, the various @*version@ macros are not expanded in the Makefile.in which causes some strange build results. Sorry if these are known issues. I didn't see them reported on the mailing list, under Bugs, and wasn't sure if the CVS repo was up-to-date with regard to the split. Thanks. Java-gnome *always* had the possibility of being built with free tools only. AFAIK it supports kaffe out of the box. AFAICT there is no way to have a pure gcj compile. You can also build it with any free java compiler (jikes) and with any free interpreter. (only sablevm has problems). Look back in the list: there are lots of threads about this issue: it's a matter of having a java and a javac wrappers pointing to the interpreter and compiler you whish to use. > I do understand that needing to update to the latest gnome packages > will be a hassle in the short term if you wish to get the latest > java-gnome releases. In fact, maybe, it's better if you stick with the 0.8.2 release you find on Sf, if you intended to write java-gnome apps. Instead if you want to contribute to the project is essential that you install the latest Gnome. And I need to update my Gnome packages to the development release, i > can't use the Gnome packages from Fedora Core 1 or other recent Linux distro, > right? Linux distros don't tend to include develepment releases in their os. > It would be too much work to try to backport the development version of > java-gnome to compile under Fedora, without other updates? You can run the stable version: I run it on RH9 without upgrades. For the head version you need the following, at least: GConf-2.4.0.1 ORBit2-2.9.2 gail-1.5.2 glib-2.3.1 gnome-keyring-0.1 gnome-vfs-2.5.3 gtk+-2.3.1 libbonobo-2.5.1 libglade-2.3.1 libgnome-2.5.1 libgnomecanvas-2.5.1 libgnomeui-2.5.1 libgtkhtml-2.5.0 I've managed to download them with a 56k modem! It's not that long. You can grab them all from: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/desktop/2.5/2.5.1/sources > > Another question: are you tagging releases on CVS? You can checkout a working copy, with cvs, without tags: it will download the head version of java-gnome, and this is what you need if you want to hack on java-gnome. Support for gcj and kaffe have been in java-gnome for nearly two years. If you have version 0.8.2 you can simply use the configure options to specify which you are using. I believe the parameter for kaffe is --with-kaffe. To get a list of all of the options you can execute ./configure --help in the root directory of the project. I do understand that needing to update to the latest gnome packages will be a hassle in the short term if you wish to get the latest java-gnome releases. Over time this will be to your benefit. When your distro finally moves to gnome 2.6 it will hopefully also have java-gnome 2.6. This will mean that you will have a release of java-gnome that is designed to work with your environment. We also will continue to support and provide fixes for stable releases while we are working on the development branch. > Another question: are you tagging releases on CVS? Maybe I am > confused by > SourceForge WebCVS, but I could not find the tag to checkout 2.5.1. I am not sure about WebCVS but I can assure the releases are tagged. Hi Jeffrey, So the patches to compile using only gcj or kaffe are on 2.5.1/2.5.2, not on 0.8.2. And I need to update my Gnome packages to the development release, i can't use the Gnome packages from Fedora Core 1 or other recent Linux distro, right? It would be too much work to try to backport the development version of java-gnome to compile under Fedora, without other updates? Another question: are you tagging releases on CVS? Maybe I am confused by SourceForge WebCVS, but I could not find the tag to checkout 2.5.1. []s, Fernando Lozano |

Here are my suggestions. 1) Take the time to think about what you enjoy. Contrary to what many believe it is work to join a project and stay with it to the point where you are a good contributor. Please look at several projects and select the one that you think you can stick with. 2) Once you have selected the project you wish to join I would suggest getting started by submitting patches to the project via the list. This gives you a chance to get to know the project before you make the commitment to the team members. 3) Once you are really sure you wish to joing a project announce this to the team. Ask the team on a good approach to get started on the project and where your skills can help the most. Know that initially you my be asked to perform some of the grunt work like updating documentation, updating example programs, etc. until you are able to prove yourself. -Jeff > Hi, > I'm sorry but I've not read your email. The web site states the latest release is 0.8.1, but on sourceforge I can get 0.8.2. Tried on Fedora Core 1 (no updates), which provided gcc/gcj 3.2.2, which should be good enough. But the configure script complains it needs a Java2 SDK. Maybe you are refering to 2.5.2 (is this the correct release number?). I've seen many references to releases like that on this list during the latest weeks, but I can't find the download files. Should I get it from CVS? []s, Fernando Lozano |

Hi, now that we have autoconf for us which substitutes the @apiversion@ in GObject and similar, what is your approach for hacking from within Eclipse? If you leave things in this way, obviously it fins a lot of errors (it can't resolve the GObject class etc...). If you simply put the apiversion in, I'm afraid it will conflict when committing new code. What do you think? -- Luca De Rugeriis <pie...@li...> |

Hi, I'm sorry but I've not read your email. The first rule of working with open source projects is that everyone hates html emails. Most people will simply pass them off as spam (perhaps automatically) and never read them. Many people (such as myself) prefer non-graphical email programs such as mutt - these are thousands of times faster when dealing with hundreds of emails per day; we don't view html in mutt as default.
