So I have no idea!! True. It really does feel like everything has been done now has it? :-) It's not like it's possible to just sit and thenk of the next big killer app to make. However, most likely it will be an app that leverages the enormous amounts of libraries and tools already available for Java. Want to make a new FTP client? I think I could top gFTP in a matter of days by leveraging the enterprisedt FTP client library. If you want to make an RSS reader, you could do that extremely quickly too since we have it all already, just need to slap a GUI on top of it. I've also considered making a better "todo" application. A smal app that sits in the panel and lets to easily keep track of everything that I should do (need panel support for this one). So, what useful stuff do we have in the Java world that we want to bring to the GNOME users? Elias |

But what application is needed?? This is the big question, and I can't think of anything! The only annoying thing I ever had was setting up my printer, however this is now almost OK because of the gnome-cups-printmgr. But compared to the C-GNOME community, it's extremely small. > I can't speak for red hat, but java-gnome is definitely included in the > main Debian repository, using free tools rather than other JVMs. I certainly would like to be able to to distribute my application as foo-1.0-noarch.rpm, rather than a bunch of foo-1.0-i386.rpm, foo-1.0-ppc.rpm, etc... In order for this to work, you have to be able to set up dependencies to the VM. The Python-GNOME community can do this, why not us? You know what would be cool? If we got ourselves a killer app written using Java-GNOME. An app everybody wants. It would be beneficial for both the Linux, GNOME, and Java communities on so many levels. Let's hope it happens. I've found a good example of using a glade xml file in the cromagnon app (shipped with java-gnome) in the CrontabEntryEdit.java file. Good luck :) Luca. -- Luca De Rugeriis <pie...@li...> |

Strange, I've finally installed eclipse and I used it right now to finish my first java-gnome app :), and I can compile and run with a button click. The only thing I've done was add external jar files (gnome.jar, gtk.jar, glade.jar) from the "Project/Properties/Java build path/Libraries". But I also have my CLASSPATH and my LD_LIBRARY_PATH pointing to the java-gnome jars and /usr/lib respectively, in my .bash_profile. > > Oh, another quicky, is it possible to use Glade to build a GUI, then > > use java-gnome with the glade code? Note that there is one "bug" in the You can find an example of using glade in the CroMagnom app shipped with java-gnome. It doesn't compile with latest java-gnome but I'm working on it. Actually it compiles, but I have the CrontabEntryEdit window still not working perfectly. I'll post it when I've done. Maybe someone wants to help? :) Andrew you can find the glade stuff in the CrontabEntryEdit.java file. Luca. -- Luca De Rugeriis <pie...@li...> |

There is a Wizard to make a GladeApp included with the Eclipse plugin. When you do "File->New" select the glade app. This will produce a stub application with a very simple glade xml file to demonstrate how to use it. Note that there is one "bug" in the example. I do a GTK.init instead of GnomeApp.init in the main loop. I have fixed it locally but haven't posted the new ones on the web site yet. I'll put it up shortly. I'm pretty new to this mailing list, and I suspect that this has been discussed before. If so, I apologise. I have been working with Java for a very long time, almost since its inception, and I think Java-GNOME is on to something here. I feel that Java-GNOME is not a UI-toolkit for Java, but rather Java-GNOME making Java a language for GNOME. Or to put it in other words: You don't generally consider Java-GNOME as the primary UI for your Java app, but you should seriously consider Java as a language when developing a GNOME application. Now for my thoughts: Imagine I decided to write a new GNOME application that would be a candidate for inclusion in the GNOME distribution or GNOME Office for example. Now, how would I go about distributing it outside of the rather limited Java-GNOME community? Before the announcement that RedHat Linux were to become Fedora, there was rumours floating around that they were to include the JDK in the distribution. This would be amazing since it would provide us with a way to build RPM's of Java-GNOME application that any user could install and run. I assume these things has been discussed before, and I'm very interested in learning what you came up with. I know C and C++ pretty well, but I hate them. :-) Java is really the language I want to use. :-) Best regards Elias |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I'm new to this java-gnome work, but I am a Java developer and I like how GTK looks and feels better than swing (plus swing performance bites) so I thought I'd try it out. I was looking through previous posts and saw there is an Eclipse plugin, great because I use eclipse. So I sparked it up and built the default app - fine. When I try to run it, of course I get this error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no GTKJava in java.library.path ~ at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1491) ~ at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Runtime.java:788) ~ at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:834) ~ at org.gnu.glib.GObject.<clinit>(GObject.java:154) ~ at org.you.gnome.simpleapp.GnomeAppMain.main(GnomeAppMain.java:37) So, I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib because that is where libGTKJava.so is. If I run the class from the console, it works fine and my window opens, however if I try to run it from Eclipse, I continually get the error. Is there a way (other than adding - -Djava.library.path=/usr/local/lib to my application runner ) to get this to work from eclipse? I am quite suprised that it didn't work by setting the environment variable in .bash_profile!! Oh, another quicky, is it possible to use Glade to build a GUI, then use java-gnome with the glade code? I haven't gone thoroughly through any example code yet or anything, but thought there might be a document that outlined this perhaps?? Looking at configure in CVS, it seems that v1.38 fixed the problem with finding the version, but v1.32 removed the test that exposed the problem to begin with. Since Debian unstable's gcj package only has libgcj-3.3.2.jar, not libgcj.jar, I don't think any version of configure after 1.32 will work with gcj on Debian. I hate to point out a problem without sending along a patch or at least a suggestion, but since I don't know the motivation behind 1.32 (couldn't find any mention of it in the list archives from last year), I don't know what to say. 1. Bug fixes, memory leak detection/fixes (will mostly come from user bug reports for now, I guess). 2. Implementation of gtk-demo in java-gnome gconf - essential (IMHO) for any large application for storing state at least. bonobo - I'd really like to see my bugviewer app running in galeon :) gtkhtml - I think it would be useful. I'd be interested to hear from people who use the c version already. gnome-print - I'd say leave it out for now. I think upstream are making some big changes to it, or planning to. Ximian have a huge patch to rewrite this to look far better, but it only works on systems with cups. There's been quite a bit of debate about it on the Debian mailing lists recently. I'm busy at uni at the moment so unfortunately should not help with java-gnome. Things will hopefully be different in December though. -- .''`. Hello there, i just found out about the gnome-java bindings and looking thru the tutorial, i was amazed of how easy it is to understand. i'm considering writing a gtk2/gnome2 display of my school project. that would be in addition to the current Swing view. i didn't find anything confirming GladeXML2 in the mailing archive, how far is it from being usable ? I already use GladeXML2 in some of my gtk2-perl projects and find it very convinient... -Pascal ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? -- Une adresse @yahoo.fr gratuite et en français ! Once I got './configure --with-gcj-compile' working, running 'make all' gave errors when it ran gcj in the native-gnome target. gcj complained that it couldn't compile the org.gnu.gnome code because of unresolved dependencies on org.gnu.gtk code. Adding "-I../lib/gtk.jar" to the end of the gcj command-line fixed the problem - see attached patch. Tom Snee P.S. I never could get 'make install' to work - line 73 of java-gnome-0.8/src/Makefile.in looks like it wants to append "_install" to each member of INSTALL_TARGETS, whereas (on my system at least) it only appends "_install" to the last member of INSTALL_TARGETS. I'd bet there is an easy fix, but I don't know enough about the auto* tools to say for sure. TJS |

Hi. I'm not a java-gnome developer or even a subscriber to this list, so please excuse me if this letter is misaddressed or unnecessary. I recently downloaded java-gnome 0.8 and ran './configure --with-gcj-compile' on my Debian Linux system. Line 3428 of the configure script sets the "gcj_version" variable like so: gcj_version=`$GCJ --version | grep 3. | awk '{print $3}'` Unfortunately, 'gcj --version' prints both the expected line, gcj (GCC) 3.3.2 (Debian) as well as an apparently unexpected line, Copyright (C) 2003 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Since the dot in the "grep 3." statement matches not just "." but any character, including the space after "2003", "gcj_version" is set to "3.3.2\n2003", which breaks certain tests later in the script. Fortunately, the problem is easy to fix: change line 3428 to gcj_version=`$GCJ --version | grep 3\\\\. | awk '{print $3}'` ^^^^ (Four backslashes are needed because the line ends up being unescaped twice before grep is run.) I have also included a patch for this simple fix. Sincerely, Tom Snee |
