I think it's very important for the game dev club to show up in force at this talk. People like Bushman can have a profound effect on the future of the gaming industry, and it's extremely important to understand how people like him go about doing their studies. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [massmail] Museum exhibit and talk Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 10:21:32 -0600 From: Carolina Cruz-Neira <car...@vr...> * Virtual Reality in the Arts and Humanities Exhibit Iowa State University Brunier Museum Until March 30, 2003* An immersive display is used to present Ashes-to-Ashes, an interactive memorial to 9/11 with testimonials from WTC survivors, and the Virtual Hindu Temple, an immersive experience of a traditional Hindu ritual. /Sponsored by VRAC, IMSE, College of Engineering and the ISU Games Developers Club./ On February 20 at 7p.m. the creators of the exhibit will be doing a presentation and panel discussion about the technical, artistic, and conceptual aspects of the exhibit. The event is open to the general public at no cost. See information below. * VIRTUAL STORYTELLING February 20, 7p.m. Brunier Museum* Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira Associate Professor Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Virtual Reality Applications Center The Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University has been applying virtual reality to the arts and humanities for many years. Working in the areas of Virtual Heritage and Storytelling we can show how long-lost places looked like, we can virtually travel to remote world locations to visit a sacred place, or we can aid on restoration efforts of historical landmarks. Additionally, our work involves creating technology that can be taken outside the boundaries of our research laboratories and shared with the public through instalations in Museums. The exhibit currently installed at the ISU Brunier Museum showcases our latests technology: a low-cost easy-to-move virtual reality system. In this system, we are showing two virtual reality storytelling applications: Ashes to Ashes and the Virtual Hindu Temple. Ashes to Ashes is a memorial to 9/11 that invited those who endured the tragedy of the September 11th attacks to tell their stories of survival. The stories are the basis for the development of the immersive environment that captures the horror of that day and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit as the healing from that horror continues. The Virtual Hindu Temple integrates a realistic model of the Hindu temple of Radharaman in Vrindavan with simulations of the ceremonies that are held at the temple. It provides a virtual experience of a Hindu Temple equivalent to visiting the actual temple accompanied by an expert. Dr. Cruz-Neira, accompanied by members of her research team will discuss details about the instalation and the process of creating the applications. During the talk, the public will be welcome to participate in the discussion. --- To subscribe or unsubscribe, send email to maj...@vr... with this in the BODY of the message: subscribe massmail -OR- unsubscribe massmail --- |

The ISU Game Developers Club is having its first meeting of the spring semester on Thursday, January 23rd, 2003. We're meeting in 1252 Howe Hall from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. We have Adrian Sannier coming to speak with us about his experiences making games and to give advice about how to set yourself up with a position in the game industry. He is a great speaker and I recommend that _anyone_ interested in developing games for a living come listen to him. Hope to see you all there! Also, check out our new web site. We have done a lot of work on it in the last month, and hopefully it is clearer and more useful. http://isugamedev.sourceforge.net/ In summary: Who: Adrian Sannier What: Club Introduction When: Thursday, January 23rd, 2003. 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Where: 1252 Howe Hall Chad |

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [ISUGameDev-officers] CA Applications for the 2003 GDC are up and running Date: Mon, 30 Dec 2002 04:46:55 -0600 From: Johnathan G. <da...@us...> Reply-To: da...@us... Organization: Iowa State University To: isu...@li... Guys, The Conference Associate (CA) applications for the 2003 GDC are now running. For those of you that don't know, the Conference Associate program is a way to get into the Game Developer's Conference for free. You volunteer to work 20 hours for the week of the conference, and in return you recieve a full Giga pass; if you check the web page, you'll see that Giga passes run around $1750. You can apply to be a volunteer at http://www.gdconf.com/volunteers/index.htm A few things to keep in mind. The essay you write for the application is VERY important; that's the only real thing they have to know about how good of a CA you might make. They do not provide lodging, but meals at the conference are included as part of the Giga Pass. Just thought I'd let everyone know about this. Well, we finally released Midworld. :) We plan to still work on it some... mostly improving performance and adding polish, as far as I understand. For those interested, I have posted the Midworld downloads and screenshots on http://isugamedev.sf.net/midworld/ I can't say much for the other officers, but I wrote an entry on http://aegisknight.org/ covering my perspective of the release. The Game Developers Club is meeting in Howe 1304 tonight (Thursday) at 8:00 p.m. Ben Scott is going to give a talk about 3D programming in general and OpenGL. For those of you just getting used to OpenGL, this will surely help you understand the math behind it and why the order of transformations is key, etc. Next week, Carolina Cruz-Neira from the VRAC will be talking about graphics in the Howe Hall auditorium. It'll be really cool, so make sure you show up! We will send out more information as it is available. Also! If you've got a tank game to show off, please send it to us at isu...@li.... We'll put it on Levi's laptop and make sure it runs... and we will show them off after Ben's talk.
